Too much food?

DH's surprise party is this weekend and I am trying to decide how much food to make.  We're just having burgers, bratts and metts and I was planning on having the following as side dishes and appetizers/snacks:

pasta salad

hashbrown casserole

deviled eggs

veggie tray

fruit tray

buffalo chicken dip

chips/pretzels/dip

chips/salsa

hanky panky

There are between 25 and 30 people coming.  I was planning on making a double batch of the potatoes and/or a double batch of pasta salad, but I think it might be too much.  I don't want to run out of food, but I don't want to have tons left over.

Re: Too much food?

  • Will there be drinking at this party?  Seems that people always eat more when there's drinking involved!

I would probably leave off the chips/pretzels/dip and hanky pankies.

  • I need to have something there like chips and stuff while people are waiting for DH and I to get there.  I'm not making the hanky panky.  Friends keep insisting they bring something so I just keep telling people to bring a dip/appetizer, hence my too much food dilemma.

    There will definitely be drinking.

  • I think you're fine, although I would skip the deviled eggs unless someone else is making them and focus on the easier stuff.  They're just messy & time consuming to make, IMO.

  • I think what you're planning on sounds great! I only hesitate at a double batch of pasta salad. Your recipe makes a lot of pasta salad and I can't even imagine how much a double batch would yield! I have to thank you again for your recipe, I can't even count the number of times I have made it. Everyone asks me to bring it!
  • I think that sounds just fine! I just had a bridal shower for my sister on Sunday and we had a boneless chicken platter and chicken salad croissants for the main food then we had all of the things you listed minus the hankey pankey plus I made cheeseballs, a cheese and pepperoni tray and cole slaw. There was alot of the fruit and veggies left over because I ordered a large tray it it was just too much, but overall...there weren't a ton of leftovers and we also had 30-40 guests! Without the drinking!

  • If it helps as a point of comparison, DS's bday party is this weekend and we're expecting between 25 & 30.  Here's our menu:

    lunch meat tray & rolls

-condiments/toppings- lettuce, tomoto, onion, mayo, mustard, etc...

    fruit tray

    veggie tray

    meatballs

    potato salad

    chips/pretzels/dip

    cookies/cake(s)

We may do one other 'main' entree depending on if our RSVPs are closer to 30 or not.

    Hope that helps!

  • No hanky panky?? Those go the quickest at our parties :)  There is some formula out there that suggests 10-12 appetizers per person if no entree, and 5-6 appetizers if you have an entree. Good luck! I looooove parties! :)

  • I would prefer to have too much food than not enough. Personally I would probably make at leat what you are saying.
