Lactose Intolerant? TMI Warning

Weirdest thing?lately I feel like as if I?ve become lactose intolerant.

Anytime I eat something with cheese, yogurt, milk or cream it literally takes less than ? hr and I?m running to the washroom! We're supposed to be having more calcium and dairy but I can?t.

I?ve tested it out the last two weeks every other day I eat some sort of dairy and it hasn?t failed. Like today at 1:20 I had a tomato & bocconcini cheese salad?I got into the office, got some water, sat at my desk and by 2:15 off to the washroom I go!

Is this normal? It is a PG thing?

DH is L.I. and now I?m wondering if the baby is too and this is why I?m reacting this way? Maybe he/she got it off of DH? (Is that crazy?)

I am taking Materna but I?m not sure if that?s enough calcium, should I talk another supplement on top of it?

Blah!

Could it be the fat content not the lactose?  I'm fine if I drink milk, but have to be careful about how much cheese or ice cream I eat.

Pregnancy just screws with your system.  I've never eaten so healthy and it's not necessarily because I want to, but also because if I don't, I REALLY pay for it.  It has nothing to do with your husband's lactose intolerance or the potential that your baby could be.

You can take a calcium supplement.  Lots of people like the caltrate chews.  If you don't like the taste of the chews, just make sure to get a supplement that's not marked as "natural source". The natural source ones I believe are made from oyster shells, so there's a concern about mercury content.

This makes me feel better, I know it doesn?t mean that the baby could be L.I. in the end...but for now it's good to know.

Hummm? If I drink a glass of milk it?s still the same effect but if I have oatmeal w/ milk I?m ok. But yes cheese, ice cream are also ?bad? LOL

Thanks?I?m apparently the only one with this from family & friends so I was just worried.Good to know about the ?Natural Source?.

    Thanks Amy.

  • LI is actually an enzyme missing from the stomach, so it couldn't be the baby, because the baby's umbilical cord doesn't go to their stomach does it??

I like the Caltrate chocolate flavoured chews. If you can't handle dairy I would definitely say the Materna probably does not contain enough calcium.

  • Also, there are plenty of non-dairy sources of calcium. You could drink calcium-enriched orange juice, eat almonds, baked beans, broccoli, etc. Lots of options.

  • Try soy milk for an easy substitute!  It's great and you can substitute it for anything you would normally use milk with, cereal, smoothies, even ice cream etc.  I recommend the Silk brand in Canada.  DH and DD are both LI and since I try to limit my animal product intake, we've become a cow's milk free household and never looked back.   PPs also listed some great non-dairy sources. :)
  • I am lactose intolerant. The funny thing (not ha ha funny) is that while I was pg, it went away. I could eat whatever I wanted and developed a LOVE of ice cream. That helped me gain some of the 57 pounds I gained while pg.

Since having my DS, the intolerance has changed. Sometimes, things with dairy don't bother me and sometimes they do. I just make sure that I'm close to home when I experiment. Yogurt, cream cheese and some cheeses never bothered me though (bocconcini being one of them).
