Where do you buy wine?

So, I am still in shock over this NY thing where they don't sell wine in the grocery store.  And I have been scouring the neighborhood liquor stores trying to find a place that sells somewhat-decent yet inexpensive bottles.  Unfortunately most of the places around here don't have much in the under-$15 range.  Also, I like to buy more than a bottle or two at a time, and hauling a case of wine up five flights of stairs is pretty unappealing.

Do any of you use order/delivery services for wine?  It looks like FreshDirect has one but the bottles there aren't cheap either.  Wine.com?  Order direct from a winery?  Is it a huge pain in the arse to deal with accepting the delivery, since you have to be home and sign for it?

I know NYC is expensive, but I *have* to believe that there's some way to get my two-buck-chuck fix!  Any suggestions appreciated!

Re: Where do you buy wine?

  • I get it from my local liquor store. The owner is great about explaining the different wines, tastes & prices. He also lets me know when he's getting something good in.

I don't know whether you drive, but there is a trader joe's off exit 15 or 16 on I-87. You could go & stock up.

  • Hm, yeah, hauling wine upstairs is *definitely* not appealing!! Sad But there's a Trader Joe's on 14th and 3rd/Irving. DH and i also like Union Square Wines on 13th and 4th. You can become a member and earn points with your purchases and they put it on a card for you and then you can use your points to taste wines that they have around the store! It's so cool! And i think they have a decent price range and very knowledgeable staff.

    GL!

  • we really like our fo hi wine store for picking up a bottle or two

astor wines downtown is great. if you spend a certain amount, they will deliver for free and you can even order online. i also love acker merrill on the upper west side. both have very helpful staff.

union square wines is also good. ?

  • FYI it's not inside the supermarket, but it is it's own shop right next door.
  • While youre in the area - you should also check out a store called Bottlerockets. 5 W 19th street btwn 5th & 6th. They have wine divided up by price, what youre serving it with and they are very friendly/helpful. Plus I think their store is pretty. hee hee.

  • I buy most of my wine at my local store, probably the same one as cheeky. I don't drink wine at home very much and usually buy it when I am bringing a gift or having guests.  The only time I have bought a case was when I was giving out bottles as holiday gifts.  I have heard good things about the stores mentioned above.
