Knives - Recommend yours!

Now that it's been a while since all of you have received knives you registered for, used them, washed them, etc.  Do you like the knives that you got?

We did not receive the knives we registered for, and I am in desperate need of a good set...seeing as I've been cutting everything with steak knives.

Recommend your knife set!

Re: Knives - Recommend yours!

  • We have the Henckel Four Star II set and it is SUPERB!  I highly recommend any Henckel, but if you decide to go with that brand, make SURE you get a set with 2 "Men" symbol on it and not one.  The sets with the single "Man" is made in China and does not hold up as well, hence the cheaper price.

    Good luck!

  • We love our knives!  They were a Consumer Reports pick, so we went with them.

  • We registered for Calphalon knives. They cut great, but you can't put them in the dishwasher because they'll rust... as a matter of fact, you can't even leave them in the sink for a few hours because they start to rust!

All of our other knives (pre-wedding) are Henckels. I don't know what line we have, but the ones with 2 "men" as pp mentioned are definitely best.

Are you on Rue La La? They're having a Zwilling Henckels boutique today, most of the stuff on their is 40% off and it's all 2-men stuff. I can send you an invite if you want.

  • C - I am on RueLaLa.  They had one set for $129, but it was a one men set, and I saw the exact same set on Amazon for $89 with poor reviews.  The others are $299+ No

I'd really like to spend in the $200 range now, with maybe a buildable set.  Plus we have hundreds of dollars in giftcards for Target and BBB, so I prob need to just hold off and get something from one of those places.

  • We're also huge Henckels fans. We have an older set that we've been building on, and with the wedding gifts people completed our set. Bed Bath and Beyond has everything individually, including blocks, so you could start building a set you like without spending a ton of dough.

  • That sounds great, Amy!  Thanks for the input.  I actually posted this on the cooking board and someone else recommended only getting a few knives anyway, so sounds like a great place to start.
  • I have a TON of knives from different sets. If you're thinking of piecing together some things, here's what I use regularly in case it helps:my Santoku's (7" and 5" - I love them!), my Chef's knife occassionally, steak knifes, and bread knife. I also have a medium sized utility knife that I use from time to time, but not as much as the others. The rest rarely get touched.
  • Awesome!  Thanks, C!
  • Buy one of the sets on Rue and I'll get $10 for referring you :o)

We have wustoffs and absolutely love them. Our set didnt come with steak knives, so I am considering buying one of the boxed sets of 4 steak knives on there right now.

  • we have Henkles Pro S series knives and we love them. DH's parents have the same knives and they actually started getting them for DH a few years back and we have just added to the set. If you get 20% coupons to BB&B you can get them slowly and save some money that way. We also have their steak knives and love those as well.

  • We got the Calphalon set that Chrissy was talking about.  Its a decent set - most likely we'll upgrade at some point in the future but they'll probably be fine for the next 5 years or so.  It is annoying that you can't put them in the dishwasher, but I think that's true of most knives.

If you are going to put together a set on your own, definitely get a Santoku knife (I prefer my 7" if I had to have 1), a chef's knife, bread knife, and a paring knife.  I use these constantly, the rest are just nice to have.

  • We have the wusthof grand prix II, but as long as you get a knife set with forged blades you should be very happy.  We choose these based on test kitchen reviews (our go-to for reviews of any kitchen appliances, or recipes for that matter).  They rated this chef knife as the best, so built our set around that.  We actually have 2 8in chefs knives and use them constantly.  A block set was on clearance at Macys (online - probably still is) for like $199.  It cam with 6 knives (chef, 2 paring - one 3 1/2 in and one 4 1/2 inch, a bread knife, a paring knife, and a sandwich knife), a honing steel, and the block.  It really is amazing, we love the quality.  Something about those germans and knives....

We just found out that BIL and his girlfriend's family bought us a set of knives as well.  We should be getting these any day now.  They had to be special ordered from a distributer overseas (I guess you can't buy them retail).  The dad is a chef, so I'm excited about these.   I'll update if they arrive today.
