2009-10 baby boom craziness

I just found out my friend's wife is pregnant.  That makes 13 IRL women that I know who are pregnant and due between now and March!  (Not including myself).  Plus, I heard that another co-worker of mine is pregnant but I'm not sure when she's due.  I also know 4 people who gave birth in May (3 on the same day!!!), one in July, and one just last week.

Is it just me or is there seriously something in the water?!?!?!?!  It honestly blows my mind.

Re: 2009-10 baby boom craziness

  • Maybe because it's trendy in Hollywood? Wink LOL I keep hearing the economy being blamed. Sex is cheap entertainment. Stick out tongue That said, babies are pretty expensive, so I'm not sure what the logic is there...

  • I have to agree 100%! I know a bunch of people who just found out they were PG or who have given birth recently. It's contagious!
  • Haha...Lori, you were one of the 3 on the same day in May.  I told you that right?  Crazy, I tell you.

  • Actually, history shows that recessions lead to baby booms.  In fact, some economists think it ends up stimulating the economy!  As one who is deep in the throws of trying to get ready for a new baby all I can say is seriously...even as a budgetzilla....I am dropping some serious coin on getting all the things we need to be ready for our little (stimulus?) bundle. LOL!

Interesting that in times like these, people are getting back to basics, which includes staying home and well...indulging in free entertainment/diversions.  Also, I think now more than ever, folks are clinging to family and community life.

  • I have 5 IRL friends who gave birth at the beginning of the year... 4 more who gave birth over the summer... 2 who are due near when I am due... 5 more due in the fall... So, yeah, for me, it feels like a boom! Or maybe I am just more aware of it now?

  • Wow must be a lucky year or something!

I just found out this week that our company, which is pretty small, has 4 sets of twins.  I'm going to have to bring in my own drinks from now on :p

  • I know what you mean!  Between this board, my 2 SIL's and 7 of my friends having babies or KU between May of this year until January...I'm going baby crazy!  The boom has hit! Big Smile

  • I'm noticing a boom around here too, 3 friends are pregnant right now and due within months of me.  I also have several friends who had babies this summer.

Lori, I love that one of the journal ariticles you posted was from the Edmonton Journal (Yay Canada!!)

  • I haven't really noticed a more that average amount of pregnant ladies lately, but like lori I have read news stories that talked about recessions leading to baby booms.

My mom works for the state welfare/social services agency and she said they got a memo talking about job losses = insurance benefit loss, which leads to less people being able to keep on on their birth control so her office has seen a huge increase in pregnant womene seeking the WIC (women, infant, and children) type programs for the first time.  Most of them have never qualified for public assistance previously.  Now she has to keeps condoms on her desk.  That will solve everything. HAH.

  • Wow, that's crazy that you ladies know that many pg girls! I know two who gave birth last April & May, one who is pg and me, that's it!
  • FWIW, I don't know any pregnant women IRL...one lady at work had a baby in April and my BFF had her baby last August.  Then again, I am probably in an "older" demographic than most of you (mid-late 30's).  I bet women in their 20's are getting KU left and right.  Scary to think about if they've lost their health coverage.  Oddly enough my great health benefits and leave policy at work is the reason we decided now was the time.
  • Another of my high school friends just posted a pic on FB with a noticible bump.  So that makes 14!  Yikes!
