Just talked to two of my senior managers and they informed me that my position is being eliminated as of Oct 1. I've worked for this company for 7 years. I would have retired with them. F--- the economy.
I have a couple of potential options within the company but I'll have to wait and see if those pan out...if not, I'll be on the job hunt. How in the world am I supposed to find a job paying what I'm being paid now, with 5 weeks paid time off, and being able to work from home?
This is officially a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

ML/Dandy (why are you posting under ML again?
) - No it has nothing to do with that woman...thank goodness. It's completely not performance related...they've just been laying people off left and right lately. They are also getting rid of a bunch of our Senior Executives too.
Hopefully one of the other options will work out...otherwise, I might have to look into really making my photography a business...
Oh no! I'm so sorry. 7 years is a long time...were the potential options within the company suggested by your senior managers or something you found on your own? If they suggested them, then there's probably a good chance you could get one of them. 5 weeks paid time off is pretty sweet and definitely hard to let go of. Fingers crossed you'll at least get to stay with the same company with the same pay and benefits.
I'm really sorry to hear this
If you are serious about the photography business, let me know. My father has been a self-employed professional photographer for 35 years, my best friend is a professional photographer and has just hired help, and my DH has his own video/production company, so I know a thing or two about being a self-employed photographer!
The two senior managers I work with mentioned them. Before they even broke the news to me, they ran around and exhausted all options within the company and even one of their spouse's companies. I'll likely be interviewing for one of the other positions next week sometime and they are also meeting with the lead over that position to sing my praises.
After having been here for 7 years and in a variety of different positions, I've met a ton of people, so I'm also going to start reaching out to other people within my network to get on their radar. Problem is...there are so many layoffs that everyone is going to be looking for something right now. Here's to hoping their references hold a lot of weight!
Oh, this sucks! Especially since you planned on sticking around.
I know nothing about the photography business, but I think its definitely worth a shot. I was just having a conversation with someone about how this shitty economy has one positive upswing - it is resulting in people actually going after their dreams or going back to school. Could be a great opportunity for you (once you get past all the strife of it all).

I'm so sorry
The economy just sucks so much right now. It sounds like you've made a lot of good contacts and working for your company for 7 years has got to count for something, right?
Good luck and keep us posted!
