Maternity Leave questions...

Ok, my boss just emailed me and said he would like to discuss my maternity leave, etc. (not sure what the "ect." is) next week.  Which is great!  I've been meaning to talk to him about it but wasn't sure how to approach it.

I have a pretty good idea of what I'd like to ask for and plan on working on an actual proposal this weekend but if you guys have any tips or suggestions, I'll take them!

Side note:  B/c our company is so small, we don't have a handbook or an official policy in place.  So we are both going into this pretty blind.

TIA!

Re: Maternity Leave questions...

  • What are you proposing? I didn't have much room for negotiation since ours is very standardized. It worked out pretty well though.
  • how long are you planning to be out?

i had to go on FMLA and 5 of the 7 weeks were leave without pay since i used up all my leave time the first week out.

do you get paid maternity leave?

  • Tiger--no clue if I will get paid or not.  That will depend on how much time I take off.  We really can't live without my salary so if it's not paid, we need to start buckling down now so we can still pay the bills.

Cissy--in a perfect world, I would like 8 weeks off and then 4 weeks of phaseback; coming back full time at week 12.  But this will only work if I get paid at least a portion of my salary during that time.  Actually, I'd like 12 weeks off with 100% of my salary paid but I'm trying to be realistic...

  • I don't have any suggestions as far as proposals for maternity leave but I thought I would share what I did to prepare for my unpaid maternity leave.

I set up an ingdirect savings account.  Their rates were so much better than the rates offered at my bank (last summer it was 3%, now I think it is 1.5%)!  I set up an automatic debit of $100 that coincided with the days that my paycheck was to be directly deposited in my bank.

I also deposited the stimulus check money we got last summer in the account.  I earned about $60 in interest (also includes a $25 bonus for opening the acct with $200) in 5 months.

Once I went on maternity leave, I planned what $ I would need in 2 week increments.  Since ING is an online bank, it takes roughly 3-4 days for money to transfer back to your home bank.  I would transfer the necessary money every other week and allow the rest to accrue interest.

That was the only way we survived my maternity leave...we'd have been in deep trouble without it!

  • And if anybody wants a referral to ING for the $25 bonus account signing, please let me know...I have several.

That is an excellent suggestion!  Thank you so much!

I think to get the $25 bonus, you have to open the account with $200.  I have really loved my ING account.  I opened a second account a few months ago to save for Christmas.  I'll PM you with a referral.

That is pretty much what I did. First 6 weeks I got paid 70% through short term disability insurance. Weeks 7-9, I stayed home with no pay. Weeks 10-12 I went back half time and got paid 50%.

Regardless of how it turns out, I highly recommend the phase back in approach. It forced us into a routine, got the baby pretty tired by being out all day, and helped me get my bearings with my new routine. She was sleeping through the night by the end of the 12 weeks. Not sure I could have done a 40 hour week waking up twice a night. I guess I could have, but I would have been more unpleasant than usual.

Does your company have short term disability?

  • I work for the City of Baton Rouge and we get FMLA.  We can take up to 12 weeks off without jeopordizing our job but in order to get paid we have to take our sick/vac/comp time.

Luckily our times just keeps rolling over so I have been trying to bank as much as possible for when I do get pg.

  • i am guaranteed job security with FMLA for 12 weeks, but it is unpaid.  i have to use PTO / extended illness time if i want to take it paid.

i do, however, have a freestanding STD policy that pays roughly 90% of my full-time pay for 8 weeks after delivery.  my extended illness time will be enough to pay me during the 2 week waiting period.  the last 4 weeks I have will be unpaid. =(

  • I have no good ideas for you Shoe but reading the other posts I have to say that I never realized how many companies don't cover maternity leave! I guess I just took it for granted with my job. I can take up to 3 months leave for medical (which having a baby falls under) without losing any salary. Guess I should add that to the list of reasons to stay at this job!

  • Where I'm running into an issue is that my company 1) does not offer short term disability and 2) we don't do formal vacation/sick time.  We're just really flexible and if you need time off, you take it.  So it's a double edged sword.  I'm glad we're so flexible but it's not like I can acrue days to ensure I am paid for at least a portion of the time I'll be out.

You should definitely stay until you are finished having kids!  And in the meantime, try to get me hired.

  • Shoe, that is kinda scary. It could really go either way. It may be a good time to stop for donuts on your way to work on Monday. Make sure the boss is in a good mood when you have your meeting!

MrsSpell - stay put, thats an amazing deal!

  • We get 6 weeks paid maternity leave. Anything beyond that (depending on how much extended sick time you have) is paid at 65%.

I am lucking out because if I have the baby on my due date (April 10), the last day of my 6 weeks paid will be the last day of school. I will then have the entire summer, paid, and I will be able to be at home with the squirt.

In my old job, Shoe, it would have been 8 weeks, unpaid. It sucked. I am glad I am not trying to deal with that now.
