Big time vent: head lice!

So today was my first breakdown, I cried like a baby!! Here's why: Before I had Bella DH and I were at his family's cottage and his aunt was complaining of an itchy scalp. I checked and she had full blown headlice. I told her to get treated asap and to wash the sheets, etc...

Fast forward... Dh and I went to his family's cottage on the lake last weekend. We had a great time although Bella got a tummyache from me eating fried fish and was up all night Sat. Anyway, I've had an itchy head since we got back but I thought it was just my hormones going crazy and my lack of sleep so I hadn't washed my hair as much as normal (usually wash every other day, now it's been about every 3 days)... Fastforward to today. I had DH check my head because it's been really itchy still. He said "I don't see anything why" I mentioned that it's been itchy since we got back and I just today remembered about his aunt having headlice. He left for yoga... I was ready to shower and decided, hell I'll see if I see anything. Sure enough one look in the mirror and I could see the headlice near my ears!! I freaked out. I started crying, called DH, called MIL to tell her (which she said the aunt went to the md and md said it wasn't head lice= WTF??), put baby in car seat, rushed to walgreens to get rid treatment, bought the stuff and hurried home. Talked to my SIL in the car who said "you better be sure that's ok while Bfing". I called Bella's dr who said NO it's not! You can't BF if you do that stuff, you have to wean!! So I asked what I use and she advised me...

Anyhow, I'm pissed because MIL swears that her sister did NOT have headlice... then How the F**k did I get it? I've only been at home and random errands. The only other bed I've slept in since giving birth is MIL's sis...

Re: Big time vent: head lice!

  • That's really frustrating!  Sorry you're having to deal with this.

Is there an alternative to using Rid?

  • Ick! I didn't know people still get head lice at this day and age!! I am so sorry you have it :-(. That totally sucks especially you have Bella!! I hope you find a way to safe way to get rid of it.

  • Oh, that is awful, I'm so sorry.  I got head lice once at summer camp and it was soooo unpleasant.  To this day, if someone even jokes about an itchy scalp, my stepmom threatens to dunk us all in a vat of Rid.  Thank goodness there was an alternate treatment for you!

Obviously it was the aunt who spread it around.  I wonder if she is still walking around with head lice?!  That doctor should have his/her head examined.

  • I don't know what alternatives you have on your list.  I know mayonaise (sorry about spelling... don't eat the stuff) is an option.  So is coconut oil.  I would go the yummy coconut oil route.  It's good for everything.  Put on a cap and leave it on as long as you can.  When you need to get everything out, you could use apple cider vinegar (mix 1/4 with 3/4 water).

I've never had lice, but have had odd instances where we had other people's kids at our house.  Next day, the call comes that oops, their kids had lice.  I'm paranoid about that sort of stuff.  So, my whole family did the mayo thing as a preventative measure.  I hate mayo, so I thought it smelled.  It also dripped out from under the cap.  Have paper towels handy to tuck in.  We never got lice... so, maybe it is a good solution.  It actually conditions really well.

  • the mayonaise thing works....put it on your head and sit in the sun....also wash all your bedding, sofa cushions etc. with lysol.  I grew up in Kalihi and had it several times from playing with the neighborhood kids....my head is itching now just thinking about it.
  • wow sarah-so sorry that you are dealing with that how inconsiderate of your husband's aunt....some people just don't think about how their actions affect others...anyway....glad that you are on the path to recovery...just as an aside my mom grew up in a developping nation (honduras) with a load of head lice-she never had it once.....when we were kids my sister seemed to be prone to it and i fortunately did not get it......the dr said that some of it had to do with PH of system....so if possible try to keep you system as alkaline as possible...that should help to

  • Yuck!  Sarah, that sucks.  I bet your aunt conveniently "misheard" the doctor's diagnosis, or maybe by the time she went to the doctor they were gone but the lice had already spread in the cottage.  It sounds like there are some good natural remedies for it though, I never would have known!

  • Yes it totally sucked!! I ended up treating with soaking my hair in vinegar, then combing with that fine tooth comb, showering, then blowdrying and straigtening. THEN I did what my md said and used cetaphil cleanser in my hair, combed again with that tiny comb, blowdried and now I have it in a ponytail. Your supposed to leave the cetaphil on all day and overnight, ew but hopefully it works!!

THanks for all the advice ladies!

  • ugh...that is so frustrating!!!  i hope you find something to get rid of them without it affecting your breast milk.
  • Eek.  I thought only little kids got lice.  How in the world did she get it?

  • How frustrating!  I hope it resolves quickly.  Let us know if the Cetaphil worked.  It's great to know there are home remedies for such things, not just harsh chemicals.
  • You poor thing!

I have to agree with this. There's such a stigma about lice, I bet the aunt was just really embarrassed to admit it was true!

I was really interested to read all of the home remedies here...the only one I'd heard of was from Little House on the Prairie, where the mother finds out that some other kids have headlice, so she soaks the girls' hair in kerosene (!!!!!!) and then braids it really tightly. Apparently it worked, but I can't imagine what that must have felt/smelled like (not to mention the trouble with going too near open flames!).
