changing the deed on my house
DH and i bought a house prior to marriage (gasp!) and now in order to update my insurance they said i need to get the deed changed first (to reflect my new married name). All the lady said was "go to the courthouse" and i found that lacking.
Has anyone else gone thru this process? If so, any tips? I live in Cherry Hill. otherwise i'm off to NJ.gov i guess.
Re: changing the deed on my house
Hi,
Trisha here from Mt Laurel. I have to do the same thing but havent got to it yet, I was told to call my twp clerks office but havent done so...let me know what u come up with.
Thanks
ok, well this is what i have found out. You need to contact a real estate agent or attorney to have them draw up a new deed, NO idea how much that wil cost. Then send that to your county clerk's office and they record it. In camden county it costs 40 bucks for the 1st page and 10 each addltn page. (which sounds like a rip to me) and then they send you back the new deed.
if anyone knows anything different please let me know.
My insurance company changed my name over the phone (State Farm).
My mortgage company wanted me to fill out a form and send a copy of my insurance in my married name.
I haven't changed the deed and the house is only in my name. I've been told that it really isn't worth messing with because the mortgage is tied to your SSN and that shows any aliases.
I *think* what they do is when you go to closing they take care of the name change.
If it's going to cost a decent amount of money, I don't know that it's really worth it. Think about how long you'll be in the house before you do it.
I actually just consulted a lawyer a few weeks ago about this very topic. I bought the house in my name only before we were married, and the lawyer said it does not have to be legally changed on the deed (unless I really wanted to for sanity's sake!) We're getting ready to refinance and add hubby to the mortgage/deed and I spoke with my mortgage company who said they would just change my name when we do closing on the new loan. No one has said anything, just the water/sewer and tax bills say my maiden name so I have to remember to have that on the check, etc.
The lawyer I was working with estimated it would be several hundred dollars ($300+?) for her to draw up the new deed and have it recorded...and could be done as quickly as about a week if needed that fast.
