need a roadtrip idea

Hello everybody! My DH and I are looking for roadtrip ideas- we have to be in Valentine, TX (near El Paso, kinda...) the weekend after Labor Day but we are off from the 7th -14th.... We were wanting to go somewhere in NM since we've been all over Texas-- Anyway-- we were thinking either Taos or Cloudcroft but I thought I'd post here to get some ideas!!

TIA!

(today is our 2nd anniversary so it's going to be a late anniversary roadtrip!!)

you can e-mail me at jhall82507ATgmail.com if you want!

Re: need a roadtrip idea

  • I think with a week you could stop several places.  If you haven't been to Carlsbad I'd start with the caverns and maybe the botanic gardens just outside of town.  You could stop at White Sands or the VLA heading north from there to Abq.  Santa Fe and Taos plazas are very popular, particularly if you like art.  There is a lot of hiking and sight seeing in Northern NM as well if ou enjoy that.

  • How much do you want to drive?  El Paso to Taos is a about 7 hours.  CLoudcroft is a lot closer!

I did a version of the loop below with my Mom when she visted last year.

    Day 1

Drive from El paso to Carlsbad on US-180/US62 (about 3.5 hours total).  You'll go by Guadalupe Mountain National park - great hiking and rock climbing.  Then continue to Carlsbad.

    Day 2

From Carlsbad you are 30 minutes away from Carlsbad Caverns.  Spend a whole day at the Caverns - it takes that kong to walk down the natural enterance, walk through teh big room and then back up. You'll want to stay late to see the bat flight.  The lunch stans at the park is really good.  Carlsbad doesn't have a lot of nice hotels or fine dining.  I always stay at the Steven's Inn (Best Western) and eat at Rojas (excellent mole).  Lucy's Mexicali is another local Mexican place/bar.  Pecos River Cafe is great for lunch.  Blue House Bakery is great for Breakfast.  And Red Chimney is the town BBQ spot.

    Day 3

You can spend a second day in the Caverns on some of the smaller ranger guided tours. You could also go to Slaughter Canyon or McKittrick Canyon or hang out at Brantley Lake. Or you could drive up US285 to Artesia (1 hr) and walk around downtown.  Roswell is 1 hour further up US285.  So you could do teh whole Roswell Alien thing.

    Days 4-5

Take US285 to NM13/NM25 to US82 from Roswell to Cloudcroft (about 2 hours drive).  Cloudcroft is in the sacramento Mountains.  Lots of hiking and outdoorsy stuff.  I like the hike to the old train tresle.  Take a side trip out to Sunspot to see the solar telescopes and the best view of White sands.  I LOVE The Lodge at Cloudcroft.

    Day 6

Take US82 out of the Sacramentos. At Alamagordo, stop by the US Space Museum.  Then continue on US 70 to Cruces.  Stop by White Sands Park - you have to "sled" on the gypsum sands.  The continue on to Las Cruces.  It's about 2.5 hours of driving between Cloudcroft and Las Cruces. There is a great B&B called Lundeen's Inn of the Arts - http://www.innofthearts.com/ .  They have a great breakfast made from scratch and the owners are active in the arts. The bathrooms are eclectic (old claw foot tubs in the room, etc.) but I really like the innkeepers and their chef.  There is a great custard place called Caliche's in Cruces.  And we SWEAR by Delicia's Cafe has amazing Mexican seafood - real Mexican, not Tex-Mex or New Mex.

    Day 7

Drive out to to Mesilla (15 minutes) and walk around their plaza - lots of cute shops. Eat at La Posta de Mesilla. Then drive down NM28 to get back to El Paso (2 hrs). Stop at  Stahlman's Pecan Farm. And La VIna Winery.

  • Another fun roadtrip would be to do the loop from El Paso to truth or Consequences to Hillsboro and up through th Black Range into Gila.  Hit Glenwood, mogollon, Quemado and then Silver City.

What are you interested in - lots of  small town NM local color.  Hiking.  Fine Dining & resorts.

  • I guess it would have helped if I had given our interests... sorry!

We are bringing our motorcycle so we are hoping to find somewhere to go on a day ride, we do a lot outside. We are also trying to find a disk golf course.

Thanks for the info!! I'm looking forward to getting out of town for a while to a new place!

  • I've never played disc golf, but I've seen the sign for this place when heading out camping:  http://www.sipapunm.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=83:world-class-disc-golf&catid=52:things-to-do-articles&Itemid=55

That is on the road to Taos.

The road from Cloudcroft to Sunspot is perfect for a motorcycle ride!  One of my co-workers is into doing motorcycle trips all the time.  I know she's doing Carlsbad to Ruidosos next week.

Southern New Mex may still be really hot diring your trip.  Your best bet may to come up to ABQ on I-10.  Then Take I-40 out to Tijeras and take the back way up to Santa Fe on NM 4 - The Turquoise Trail.  You can stop in Madrid and teh Mine Shaft Tavern (a great miner/biker bar with lots of local color).  Then take 285 to Espanola and go onup to Taos and teh Enchanted Circle - Sipau, Angel Fire, Eagle Nest.  It's a great ride on a bike.  And Taos is ccelebrating the anniversary of Easy Rider, so there's a bike connection for you!
