URGENT: dogs need homes NOW!

The Grant County has to adopt out 30+ dogs by Monday or they will be euthanized. Now to call DH...

Re: URGENT: dogs need homes NOW!

  • Are there any rescues that could pull some of them?
  • Not intending to create conflict here, but shelters all over make these decisions every day.
  • The website says they adopted out 55 dogs, so none will need to be put down now.  That's good.  I wonder if they just say that to get people to adopt?

  • notapetrock- yeah, I thought of that too.

According to the Channel 12 story, the Grant County shelter has been inundated by dogs because word got out that they rarely euthanize. One report said they hadn't put a dog down in 2 years. Apparently because of this people were coming from neighboring counties to drop dogs off.

One volunteer said that it was not uncommon for them to show up in the morning and find 5+ dogs that had been dropped off overnight.

So, from what I understand, the shelter had become so overcrowded that the county ordered them to find homes for over 30 dogs to relieve the overcrowding, or they would have to be put down, regardless of their condition or how long they'd been there.

I checked out their site, and took notice of how many were purebred. I just have to wonder how many of these dogs were bought from breeders (good or bad) and are now homeless.
I don't understand why people keep buying dogs, when there are so many that need homes desparately. I just don't get it.

Unless you're planning on being a responsible breeder yourself, or seriously plan to show the dog, there is no logical reason to buy a dog. There are plenty of great, mixed & pure breed dogs at rescues across the country. It just doesn't make sense to me.
  • I am hoping that the dogs were found good homes, because it breaks my heart to think about the dogs being put down.

The no-kill shelters in this area are usually packed full of dogs, because they are not adopted out as quickly as they come in.

Reputable breeders are hard to come by, and it drives me crazy when people get dogs from irresponsible backyard breeders. The only reason to get a dog from a breeder is to show them or better the breed.

There's always so many poor dogs and cats sitting in shelters waiting for someone to just care for them.
