The Ergobaby carrier is worlds better then the Bjorn. Ugh, I only wore the Bjorn a couple of times and my back paid for it.

  • The Baby Bjorn Active or Synergy models have a back brace... The original one without a back brace looks like trouble.

And, just fyi, there are TONS -- TONS -- of used Baby Bjorn carriers available for very cheap on Craigslist.

  • Malia, I think (from memory) that I didn't have the back brace (I bought my Bjorn in 2007 so it's quite possible it's a bit better now).

Honestly, (aside from the back strain/pain) I really didn't like how Maya 'hung' from the Bjorn, her legs hanging straight down. There seemed to be a lot of weight on her pelvis as a result of her sitting this way and I always instinctively braced my arms under her bottom whilst she was in it so that her weight was better supported.

That's why I loved the Ergo. The bottom area of the carrier is a lot wider to where her butt and under her thighs is covered, so her legs are more in a 'bent and lifted' position (does that make sense?) and it's like she's sitting and fully supported, rather than hanging.

Just giving my review on one vs the other but the Bjorn is cheap enough where, if you don't like it, you haven't wasted much money. I spent around $120 on it brand new because I didn't get other people's opinions and thought "Hey, it looks like the most popular so it must be good" lol.

this is what they told me at the baby store I went to - that the way the baby's legs dangle just isn't good for them - the knees should always be at waist level with their legs "froggy legged" to give them good support.

BUT... I know some people love it anyway though so I just thought I'd throw this post out there.... I know there are lots that are cheap on craigslist but not as cheap as this one which will probably work out to $5-10

yep - that is the same concern that I have.  The local "baby wearing" class really discourages those type of carriers.  They had some research, however I'm not completely sure that I believe the claim bjorn = hip problems, but it just doesn't look comfortable.  Just from plain observation it looks like people use the ergo and other mei tei type carriers a lot more around here, but I think that is mostly b/c they can carry their babies a lot longer (age wise) with more comfort for both parent and baby in something like the ergo.

  • Hmm. Interesting, I had not heard that. Well our Bjorn Synergy was a free hand me down, so we'll try it and if we don't like, then we'll take a 2nd look at the Ergo. Thanks for the info!
