Anyone in State College area?

Hi there! I'm a new transplant to State College (joining my partner, who's a postdoc, for a one-year stint). I think I'm slowly getting accustomed to the area, so now I have 2 questions.

1) May I please come play here?

and

2) Given that we're only here for a year, what sorts of local things should we be sure to do? He's bigger on the great outdoors than I am, but I'm not opposed to being outside if it intrigues me. (any tips on things that we should just avoid are welcome too)

Thanks women, I hope your weekends are great!

Re: Anyone in State College area?

  • I'm from State College!!  Welcome!

    1)  Of course you can play here

    2)  If you are looking for something to do tomorrow, you could catch the last home game for the State College Spikes.  The games are lots of fun.  Also, if you really want to live dangerously you could go to the Grange Fair which runs until Thursday.  It's quite interesting...but there is tons of great greasy fair food :)  Tailgating is always fun - even if you aren't going into the football game.  I can't really think of anything else fun and exciting to do now but will let you know if I come up with anything.

Hope you have a great weekend too!!

  • Hi Triumphant!  Welcome to SC :)  I'm the nestie that you emailed with when your DH was planning his move up here - I changed my screen name for privacy reasons.  I hope your move here went smoothly!

  • Oh how I miss State College this time of year... LOVE football season!!!

Make sure you go to at least one football game while you're there. The tickets for the earlier season games will be easier (and cheaper) to get. Hit up the creamery and you must go out and get  a monkey boy!!! Enjoy living amoungst the young and being able to still get pizza at 2am :o)

  • Welcome.  If you like the outdoors, there are some great hiking and biking trails.  The Bicycle Shop and Appalachian Outdoor are two great local shops that can help you out.  Agree with pp about checking out a football game, the Creamery, and downtown.  Great farmer's markets and weekend events coming up with the fall.  Hope you enjoy it!!

I second hitting up the creamery!! I am not from SC, but the creamery ice cream is honestly the best ice cream I have ever had- great milkshakes, too!

  • Welcome!!  We like to do lots of walking and there are lots of fun parks, etc to walk around in.  Bellefonte is fun to walk around (and a bit more of a workout with the hills) because of all the old Victorian houses, etc.  Way's Fruit Farm has a fall festival coming up, Victorian Christmas in Bellefonte, lots of fun stuff coming up.  Keep an eye for shows at the BJC, etc.  State College is such a unique and fun area, so just make sure you get out and explore...there is much more to the area than just campus!

  • Welcome to the area! If you are into outdoor stuff there are lots of state parks around (DH and I love to fish so it works out well for us) and lots of places to hike.

I agree that Bellefonte is fun to walk around in, The Plaza there is a neat antique store there that is great to just wander through even if you aren't a big antique collecter because there is always some crazy stuff there. If you go to Bellefonte you should eat at JIm's, its soooooo good and cheap.

I alway want to go to Penn's Cave but never make it, I think it is in Center Hall.

  • Thanks women! Sounds like there's plenty of stuff to check out for me!

  • I grew up in SC!

There have already been some great suggestions mentioned... you could also go out to Shaver's Creek - canoeing, hiking, neat nature center - it's a pretty little area.

Also - Whipple's Dam is cool - it's a State Park. Link here has a photo:

Hmm, what else... Lake Raystown is actually in Huntington, but is great for boating, swimming, picnics.

  • Welcome, both to the board, and to the area!

There are lots of great suggestions so far, and I highly recommend getting a Friday Center Daily Times if only for the Weekender section.  It actually does a great job of listing things going on both locally in State College, and even events in Williamsport, Lewisburg, and some other areas that are about an hour's drive away.
