Need help

with a work project.

If your boss told you that in a couple of weeks you would be working from home moving forward, what would be some basic questions you would have?  For example, "would the company reimburse me for internet charges?"

Thanks girls.

Re: Need help

  • Who can I contact if I am having trouble accessing the company information/intranet/web-site?

What hours will IT be available if I need them?

Can I get reimbursed for long distance charges?

Will calls be forwarded to my home phone if someone calls my work phone?  Is call forwarding available so I don't need to give out my home/cell phone number?

What hours am I expected to be in contact?  Core hours 9-5 or anytime I'm needed?

  • If you get reimbursed, you need to ask if it'll be taxed as a fringe or non-fringe benefit.

What happens if I need to come into the office to take care of something.  Am I expected to come in right away?

How long will I be working from home?  Is this a temporary or permanent thing?

Can I work non-traditional hours if I wanted to?

  • good ones Melanie, thanks.  keep em coming...
  • How often will I be required to come into the office and how much notice will I have?

Mel already came up with a lot of good ones.  I'm not much help since I don't work from home.

  • Will my visability withing the company be affected?

Will any bonus/raise be lessened due to this arrangement?

Will I need to sign a flexible work agreement?

Will I give up any duties/take on additional responsibility?

Will I still have travel opportunities?

  • I am not a tax buff but isn't there some credit or deduction for a home office?  Mel or Val would probably know this.

  • Yes there is but the IRS is very hell bent on it being soley used for business and no personal use.  If it qualifies you can also take a % of your utilities (based on the square footage of the office and the total square footage of the home).  Often times, it's more of a hassle computing the deduction for the amount of tax savings after taking into account the tax preparer's charges/fees.
