f/u to Boca Restaurant

Wow, this got really long, but I was so happy with our evening on Saturday that I had to share our experience with you guys, in case you're ever on the lookout for a special occasion restaurant.

I got back in touch with an old friend from high school a few weeks ago through facebook, and it turns out that he's one of the chefs there, so when I called to confirm our reservation on Friday afternoon they said that he had reserved us the chef's table!

The chef's table at Boca is more like a chef's counter - it's right in the kitchen, butting up against the prep/plating area. It's a very small kitchen so you could see everything that was going on. We were right next to the expediter, and it was just fascinating to see how organized and well-run everything was, even when the orders started rolling in and you could tell they were just slammed. Everything at Boca is wood fired, and we were right across from the oven - it was really neat to watch them putting the wood on the fire and cooking the protein dishes in there. The chefs were all really personable, they kept showing us different foods and explaning what they were doing and why.

We were supposed to do the three course meal plus dessert, but because we were at the chef's table we got tastings of other courses, as well, which was nice because it was so hard to choose which dishes I wanted. They had a pile of the freshest-looking tomatoes I've ever seen sitting on the side-board, and just when I was wishing that I had gotten the caprese salad instead of the caesar they brought over a sampling of it. It was amazing!

We both started with the Boca Caesar, mostly on the recommendation of my foodie co-worker, who said it was the best she'd ever had. It completely lived up to my expectations. They stuck the whole chunk of romaine on the wood-fired grill and it added such a smoky flavor. I've never had any salad even comparable. I told our maitre'd that I would have licked the plate if it wouldn't have been considered bad manners :)

After that was the pasta course - I had the linguine with garlic butter and sauteed cauliflower. It was so light and so flavorful - I could eat that dish every day! The cauliflower and garlic were just perfectly browned and it was a really nice combination.

Next, they brought us a sampling of their seasonal ravioli dish - it was filled with a whipped mixture or marscapone cheese, ricotta, and sweet corn. I thought it would be a really heavy dish with that kind of filling, but they were so light! The pasta wasn't at all chewy, I'm still amazed at how fluffy they were.

I ordered the Gerber Farms Chicken for my main course, which came with risotto. Like the courses before it, I was blown away by how much flavor the wood grilling imparts on the food. It was perfectly crispy on the outside. I had leftovers, so they're waiting for lunch in the fridge and my tummy is rumbling just thinking about them!

I can't leave out dessert, of course - I had the chocolate torte, which was perfectly rich and went very well with the champagne toast they provided us with for our celebration. Charlie had the donuts, which arrived steaming hot - they were light and airy, dusted with cinnamon, sugar, and lemon zest. As cliche as it sounds, they reminded me so much of the ones my gramma used to make when we were little!

In addition to the to-die-for food, the service was outstanding. They were so accommodating and attentive. The sommolier even rolled out an impromptu wine tasting for my husband after they had gotten into a discussion about which aging method was best. Our waiter was great, he explained every dish to us - where the ingredients came from, how it was prepared, what the inspiration was. He commented on the fact that I was only using my small fork, so I told him that I prefer to use a smaller fork because I feel like I'm eating more. When he set the table for the next course he brought me out a selection of the tiniest forks I had ever seen!

It was an amazing evening, a perfect way to celebrate our anniversary and birthdays. If you're looking for a really special dinner, this would be it! Bonus if you can get the chef's table, too!
