Relocating to Albuquerque next month

Hi ladies!

I am a Phoenix Nestie who is most likely relocating to Albuquerque for work next month. I'm really excited but do not know a soul in New Mexico so I am a bit nervous. I have been on the Nest/Knot since I got married in 2004 and am actually single now, so it will just be me and my dog coming out! I flew out yesterday to meet with the company I will be working for- and it was my first time in NM- I loved it.

I have been doing a lot of research online, but would love some real life expertise from you girls as well. I will be working mostly in Abq at Carlisle/Lomas, and am looking to rent a house or condo within a good traveling distance of that. I really like the downtown area too! Any suggestions of areas to look?

What are some of your favorite things to do? Restaurants/bars/coffee shops that you like? I would love to learn anything you can tell me!

Do you all ever have GTG's? I'd love to meet some new people when I get out there!

 TIA!

  • HI! Welcome to the Board!

I am moving out to ABQ next month too from the East Coast.  The women on here seem very nice! We can get to know the area together!

  • awesome! I read some of your posts- it looks like you guys are looking at some houses- what areas have you liked the best?

I'm glad that someone else will be new to the area too!

  • Welcome!

I actually moved here from Phoenix too a couple of years ago. If you had any kind of commute in Phoenix, you will find Albuquerque way easier!  Close to the area you would be working, I really like Nob Hill and downtown.  I know we would live down there if we didn't need so much space these days.  I think someone on the board lives in that area so maybe they can give more detail.

Hope you have a stress free move (is that possible?) and a safe trip out!

  • Welcome  :)  We are going to be a full board soon!

We've been talking about a GTG in Oct or Nov, but no set plans yet.  Good luck with your move!

  • We are looking in NW ABQ and RR.

I am wishing you a very smooth and stress free relocation!

ABQ/NM is wonderful! I can't wait to start a new life there and make new friends!

  • Welcome to New Mexico! We have another new Nestie!

We have sporadic GTGs.  We finally just got enough of a quorum to have them.  (And since the board covers the whole state, we have folks down in Las Cruces that we haven't done a GTG with yet. And Katy comes in to ABQ from Portales.)

I'm curious where you'll be working. I go through Carlisle/Lomas all the time. (I can totally see not saying it on a board, though.)

I'm the nestie who lives in the UNM/Downtown area. I'm an urban girl at heart and love walking everywhere. So my area is perfect for me.

Carlisle/Lomas is the upper edge of Nob Hill.  There are lots of cute houses for rent down Carlisle, Monte Vista and Girard. The North UNM area and Netherwood Village is just west along Lomas and has lots of cute houses for rent.  Lomas/Girard has some cute townhouses/condo too.  The Spruce Park (between University and I-25 and MLK and Lomas) is my favorite neighborhood.  There are lots of apartments and townhouses they rent.  I live just S of MLK in the Sycamore Neighborhood.  My area has more college kids so it can be a bit nosier. South of Central are Silver Hills and University Heights (called the student ghetto).  And Ridgecrest is S of Central and east of Carlisle.  All those areas are a 5 minute drive to your work and many are walkable. Downtown you have the Gold lofts, ABQ High school lofts, etc.

I would also look into the Mountain & 12th area.  You can go up a block to Lomas and get to work fast and you're near Old town and downtown.

And in that area you're close to Flying Star (Central about 2 blocks west of Carlisle), Winnings (near UNM), Cafe Guiseppe (Silver & Richmond?).  And for bars you have Zinc, O'Neals, Imbide, Nob Hill, Kelly's all in the Nob Hill area. And Model Pharmacy at Carlisle/Lomas/Girard is a cute old school pharmacy.

  • Thanks so much for everyone's kind words and welcome! I am getting more and more excited- this is really just a decision I  made this week.

Flame- thanks for all your great advice- I really like the Nob Hill area and was definitely looking around there! I will probably drive out next weekend to find a place- so I am sure I will have more questions!

Lame question- What is Flying Star? I've seen a ton of places that advertise being close to it....so it must be cool. :)

I'll definitely post where I will be working as soon as I make the final acceptance and things are concrete- until then I don't want to jinx it!

  • Flying Star is a restuarant/coffee house.  They have really great food and amazing desserts. It's a great place to hang out (free wi-fi) and people watch.  They are all over town, but the original (I think) is on Central in Nob Hill.  They also have a separate coffee shop called Satellite.

  • Location wise I don't have any great suggestions that haven't already been given. As for food I have quite a few suggestions, seeing as DH and our friends are totally foodies. Seeing as I keep thinking of places I will just list them off with location...

     Nob Hill area:

~Shogun: our favorite place for sushi (they do Bento boxes for lunch). Great service and a wonderful shrimp tempura roll called the Super Crunch Roll.

~Crazy Fish: another good sushi restaurant, though we have found that their rolls tend to be a little to large for our taste. Though the flavors are great.

~Two Fools: which is a great Irish pub; it's your basic fish and chips, shepherds pie and the far too yummy Irish nachos. They also have TVs that are usually showing Football or Rugby.

~Brasserie La Provence: Good little French restaurant, enjoy going there for lighter fairs and brunch.

~Kelly's Restaurant & Brew Pub: Not the best food by any means, but it's good. Your basic burger and sandwich place (good sweet potato fries). They make their own beer and have a large list (made by mixing different their beers together). What's nice about it is they have a very large outside seating area and are very dog friendly. They bring out water for our dog all the time and even sell dog food.

~ II Vicino: Being a Colorado native I am very happy they have this here. Great brick oven cooked pizzas and their own beer.

    Old Town:

~Seasons: It's stated as Southwestern food. I don't know if I agree, but the good is wonderful. A much nicer place to go in town. They have an upstairs that has outdoor seating and they have live music during the summer.

~La Crepe Michel: Higher price, but wonderful French cuisine. They have a menu that changes frequently so you can try new things.

~Church Street Cafe: The only New Mexican style food I like to eat. Great, true, green chili. Cool old artifacts that they found and have on display.

~Dog House Drive-In: If you like hole in the wall type places and sometimes love eating fattening yet so yummy hot dogs, this place is for you. I love their chili dogs.

Even though this one should be under the Nob Hill list, I am listing it separately. That's because it's our most loved, and very new, restaurant: Cosmo Tapas. As the name says they do Tapas. It's a great place to go if you don't want a lot of food or with a group of people, because then you can try a lot. The menu is extensive and they always have specials. On Sunday it is Paella night. Mixed drinks are very well made. Great lounge area and small area outside to eat. The service has been wonderful and they remember us every time we go in. If you go get the churro dessert which comes with the best chocolate dipping sauce ever!

Here's a link for Nob Hill and the restaurants.

Hope that helps with food. We love these place, though we do tend to have a lot of dinner parties at home. It gives us the chance to just sit around and talk and enjoy the company without feeling rushed.
