Mini Vacation Help

Ladies, I need your help/suggestions/thoughts. I'm pretty sure this has been posted before but I can't find anything.

Our 1-year anniversary is coming up in October and we (okay well mostly me) want to get away for a few days. DH just started a new job (finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) so he won't be able to take any time off. We are planning on leaving on Friday evening and coming home on Sunday.

Here's our requirements. No more than 4 hours drive, or we can fly but we will need to probably find a direct flight. We don't want to do Hocking Hills or Gaitlenberg or a beach. We are kind of looking for a bed and breakfast, but could go with a regular hotel. Niagra Falls had been mentioned and that is on our short list. We also were thinking about somewhere up along the coast of New England.

So as you can tell we're going in a bunch of different directions. Anyone got any thougths?

TIA!

Re: Mini Vacation Help

  • Louisville has some really nice B&Bs and I was impressed with the prices.  There's Murphin Ridge Inn (adams county?).  It's nice, but not cheap (about $125 for a room, double for a cabin, and they require a 2 night stay on weekends).  The food is great though, and it's nice to just be alone in the country (no tv there!).  I really want to go to the Ohio Amish country (near College of Wooster) but just so you know most Amish-run places will be closed on Sunday.  There are other places up there though, like Canal-Winchester and the Football Hall of Fame (if we ever go I told dh I'd take a book while he looked around!).  You could do Cleveland or Columbus if you wanted a big city trip.

ETA-also nice is the Lancaster area of Pennsylvania, but you'd probably want to fly into Philly for a weekend trip b/c it's an 8 hour drive.  We also liked Nashville.  I like Chicago (but I like flying there).  I think it's too much for DH though.  I do think he could deal with DC.  Flights are cheap and most of the museums are free.

  • Nashville isn't too far of a drive and tons of fun!!

  • I'm not sure if there is a direct flight or how long it is. But you would probably love Newport, RI. I went about 7 years ago and LOVED it. Lots of cute B&B's around, cute downtown, good places to eat, lots to do. I think New England area would be nice.

Other places (some would need to fly):

    Chicago

    Nashville, TN

Madison, Indiana (small town about 90 minutes away). DH and I went here this summer just to get away. Cute downtown area a few nice places to eat, wineries, and a lot of B&B's in the area.

    Indianapolis

  • I am from New Hampshire and New England in the fall is just amazing. There would be a lot of really nice places along the coast of Mass, NH or Maine. It might be a little chilly, but not cold and it would be really nice. You could also do the white mountins in NH or Vermont and it was be really pretty that time of year.

  • I second Murphin Ridge -- we just went up there two weekends ago to our 2nd anniverary -- it's literally one of my favorite places. Their cabins are amazing...and the food...I can't even begin to describe. ;)
