I'm in the US, but since you guys get 12 months for maternity leave, I thought you may have more insight than many of the US nesties.
School started back this week and DD (14 months) is in daycare on campus 4 days a week (2 days are 8 hours, 2 days are 6 hours). She was here last semester for 2 days per week, but she was much younger (obviously) and it took almost half the semester for her to adjust and actually start having "good days" (ie: days where she didn't cry half the day).
We've been home the entire summer together. Basically since May 1st, she's only been left with me, DH, or my parents.
She really likes her daycare room because they have a guinea pig (every morning when we get there, she asks to go see the "puppy"). But that seems to be the only thing she likes.
Tuesday, I stayed for about an hour with her and once she started venturing away from me, I left. She cried almost all day. She would stop occassionally to watch the other kids, then realize that she wasn't crying anymore, and start again. Her eyes were so red when I got there
Yesterday, I could only stay for about 15 minutes. She flipped out when I left. The teacher said that it was 10x better than the day before, but it still basically seemed to suck. She cried off and on, but less than Tuesday. Basically any time another kid wants attention from the teacher, she freaks out. She won't really play, but she watches the other kids some.
Did anyone else have this rough of a time when your DC started daycare as a toddler? How long did it take to adjust?
Re: XP: ?? about starting daycare after mat. leave
It's just heartbreaking. We had to literally peel her out of my arms this morning.
DS was 18 months when he first went to daycare and it was horrible. He cried when I left him there and he cried most of the day too. It took him about 2 weeks to finally start getting use to the routine and enjoy being with his friends.
Trust me it does get better!
That's hard.
DD is a tough little bird. She was ok when I went back. Fortunately I was able to arrange my schedule so she'd only need care a couple of half days a week.
However, its' gradual entry week at her school right now. Some kids are having a rough time. (3.5 year old Hank cried till he was hoarse.) But, the directress said even the toughest cases will be totally fine in 2 weeks. Once in a blue moon it might take 3.
Hang in there mama. It will be ok. I hope they give her lots of attention and cuddles when she needs them.
