Obama's Speech to School Children
http://news.yahoo.com/s/bloomberg/20090903/pl_bloomberg/amzy0pmaxmra_1
In short, Obama is giving a speech via the web next Tuesday. The Education Dept is encouraging schools to have the children watch the speech.
A local talk radio show that I listen to in the afternoons (mainly to give myself a laugh) opened the topic for discussion today. Parents were calling in absolutely outraged that this President would try to "indoctrinate" their small children and sway them to his side. One woman said, "He only wants to speak to them to turn my children against me and ask me why I hate the President."
What are your thoughts?

Re: Obama's Speech to School Children
I was almost sick listening to the callers this afternoon. Everyone was talking about Nazi's and this is what Hilter did to the Nazi Youth, etc. Seriously, people?! You don't even know what the hell he's going to say! I don't know what he's going to say. These people are going to keep their children out of school ALL DAY Tuesday to skip the one hour speech. Do you hate him THAT much?!
The article points out that President Bush did something similar in 1991. Were you complaining then? Or is it only because he's Obama?

I am going to give Pres Obama the benefit of the doubt and hope that he wouldn't take advantage of an opportunity like that to push an agenda on little kids. Not that I think a bunch of school aged kids would understand him even if he did.
I just reread that and kind of laughed at how ridiculous that is. Honestly, I would be furious if a Republican president tried to push his agenda on my kid also.
Even though the staunch Republican in me cringes, I certainly wouldn't keep my kid out of school because of it. And I also LOL'd at this:
Florida Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer, who called it an attempt by Obama to ?indoctrinate America?s children to his socialist agenda.?
Do 8 year olds even know what socialist means?
This is a bit ridiculous!
I didn't vote for Obama and I don't agree with a lot of what he does (the major issue right now being the health care) but I wouldn't compare him to Hitler and keep my kids out of school. That is just plain ignorant on those people's part.
I teach one Social Studies class to 7th graders. The school board is showing it on Thursday, after it airs only because the bandwidth cannot support every school watching it on Tuesday.
They sent letters home the other day about the speech. We have lesson plans from ed.gov that we can use. They have discussion questions and such. There is nothing on there AT ALL about his agenda. He is talking to the students about what it means to set goals, why it is important to take advantage of their educations, etc. It is all about education. It is not about health care, the economy, anything.
We have parents outraged, I mean, completely irate, that we are showing his address to the students. They are keeping their students home all day. I think it is very ridiculous.
Bush addressed students in the same format, he talked about staying drug free.
Clinton addressed students about education.
Bush Senior addressed students in the early 90s about education.
Reagan addressed students about drugs (I think) as well.
Why is there such an outrage about Obama doing the same sort of speech? I don't get it.
...But, he is not talking about his politics. He is talking about staying in school, why education is important and setting goals, I think the kids will understand what he is saying. He is making it on a youth-friendly level.
if that is all it will be about then that's great. I'm all for pro-education or anti-drug talk. I didn't have a chance to click on the link, I was just observing from everyone else's posts.
If, he was prosolitizing and trying to convey his message to the wee ones, the proper thing as a parent to do would be to have a discussion with the child(dren) about it later on. If people weren't so lazy as to have to learn about things ahead of time so that they themselves are educated on the subject then I would have a different stance. It really burns me that people are still teaching their children hate through fear. I understand fully, as a parent you need to guide your child, but shielding them from the world is not helpful. And that's all I have to say at 5am!
A big part of education is hearing many different sides of an issue and making up your own mind. And being able to see that your point of view is not the only one.
I can't imagine anything worse than raising a judgemental, narrow minded child. Is that the goal of these parents?
yes
Thumbs up!
