Hoarders - TV Show

So who's been watching??

We're 3 episodes in and I'm still stunned by the show.  For someone that loves to clean her home, this show may be rough to watch if you haven't seen it yet.  Its like a car wreck.  Its disgusting but you still want to watch it. MH and I get all into the show.  I find myself yelling at the TV and then I quickly remind myself that this is truly an illness.  Very sad!

Any thoughts??

Re: Hoarders - TV Show

  • I haven't watched it, I keep meaning to.

It really is an illness though.  The mother of someone I grew up with died a few years ago after suffocating under stuff.  I realized why we were never invited to that girls house.  It must have been horrible for the family.  It's crazy because she always made sure the daughter had the best of everything (clothes, car, dance lessons, etc) so her daughter was totally put together and really popular and her mother was dealing with a horrible illness that they totally kept hidden.

  • MH and I came across this last weekend and watched about an episode and a half.  My grandma used to keep stuff (she was a depression-era lady) - not nearly as bad as the people on the show - and my Mom would always tell us, "If I ever get that bad, tell me!  I don't want to be like that!".

I felt horrible for the hoarders!  I know they made their own messes, but obviously they'd have to be seriously ill to get to that point.  For most normal people, it would be humiliating to have a TV crew go through your home, but for these people it must be a nightmare.  I just can't imagine being so sick.  It made me really sad, but at least they were getting help.

I also thought that the people who were helping them were SAINTS!  They were so patient and kind to them, in conditions that I couldn't even bear to stand in, let alone spend days in there.  I could never do that job.

  • I totally want to watch ever since you told me about this show.  But if I put one more reality show on the DVR I fear Todd will kill me!!!

So my mom didn't think my dad would like the show because in ways, he hoards things.  Truthfully, I think we all have a little hoarding in us.  Just not to extremes like the show.  You might find that Todd likes the show.  JR likes it.  But it always ends up in a discussion about his own parents house......sadly!

For sure!  Saint was the word I used this past Monday.  This woman was so patient with the old woman.  Honestly, the older woman ticked me off though.  I tried to be sad for her but she caused so many issues with her kids and put her mess before her kids........THAT I don't have patience for!

Robbi.......the 2nd episode aired a story about a man that lives in Olympia.  Eee gads!  You wouldn't believe what his apartment looked like.  Do you go to the library in Olympia?  If so, you'd probably see him there.  He's obsessed with the library.  Hence why he would never clean his home.  But they cleaned up his place so nicely and he was sooo appreciative unlike some of the episodes I've seen.

  • eek!  I wonder if like other mental illnesses it is slightly more prevalent in certain areas... b/c that lady I was talking about was from Shelton.

I DO go to the library all the time, but only the Tumwater branch, and usually just to pick up my requested books (so much easier that way). There are some REALLY interesting people that hang out at the library though.  I was doing a volunteer class that met at the downtown branch and that one was particularly interesting.

haha Amy, I know what you mean about the DVR "rules" - MH is totally anal about the DVR, he usually doesn't do series record he just sets us his shows each week... for whatever reason the ones that I do that usually record the show over and over again (even if I say only record new episodes... ahem project runway) and it frustrates him.

  • I love that show!  It is so odd and intriguing.  Did you see the one with the lady who had all of the rotting pumpkins?  She couldn't even part with them.  After she agreed it was rotten, and the people were taking it, she dug in to grab the seeds b/c it was such a special pumpkin.

On the other side, I think it is a great show for making me get rid of things.  My daughter definitely has hoarder tendencies.  She's the kid who wants to save the ribbon from presents.  She wants to keep every toy (yes, after 7 years, that can add up).  So, our house is clean, but too much kid stuff.

We're wondering if we should have her watch the show.
