BR- How did your NT scan go? (long/vent)

I'm wondering if mine was normal or it just sucked. I feel that it sucked. First when we got in the room I introduced myself and the lady says, "ya, I thought you would be Julie, not him" and points to my DH. Just trying to be funny I'm sure but I never even got her name. Then she started doing the u/s and clicking away like crazy. She didn't explain anything at all that she was doing, or pointing anything out. At one point we saw our LO move but she didn't even stop for a second to let us see. The only thing she did tell us is that the h/b was 150 and she said normal was anyting between 120-180. She let us hear the h/b for about 3 seconds. She also said LO measured 2.2mm. Since we didn't know what that meant, we assumed it was okay. Our appt took a total of about 10 minutes, including her pricking my finger for blood.

When we were leaving the office, I came back in to schedule our next monthly app. & the doctor saw me come back in and came up to me & said the 2.2 was measuring thick for 12w and they like to see the number more around 1. I asked if there was still a good chance that everything could turn out fine and he said there was still a chance. Not too reassuring.

What what did I miss out on? From what I've learned from Dr. Google since, anything under 2.5mm is normal? What did your doc say? What was your measurement? Also she didn't mention the presence/or not of a nasal bone. Did yours? Does that matter?

Thanks for listening. Extra Thanks for telling me about your NT scan

Re: BR- How did your NT scan go? (long/vent)

  • wow what an awful experience.  I did not get an NT scan but have been to the perinatologist twice now - once for my anatomy scan aka "big u/s" and then more recently to check my placenta previa.  both visits were very nice....the nurse talked us through everything, took the time to point out stuff, and then told us the doctor would be in to confirm her findings...then he would come in, repeat the scan (but he went quicker) and then went over everything with us and also stopped to ask us if we had any questions or concerns.  so very different from what you are describing...  I'm sorry they weren't more helpful or reassuring...i hope that everything is ok w/the baby.  I would call back and ask for more info/clarification - you paid for the u/s - you should get more out of it!!!
  • Sorry to hear yours didn't go so well.  Sounds like your tech was just not cool.  Mine was really awesome and she got us the best profile pic so far.  She also told us the gender right away (after asking us if we wanted to know).  It was correct so far, confirmed at 16w.

When she measured the NT, the tech told us it was good.  My doc said they like it under 3 mm, ours was 1.4.  And the tech also mentioned the nasal bone was present.  It does matter because it goes on the report that they send out to get the final results.  It's used for determining Down's risk, but not Trisomy 13/18.  (I only know because I saw it on my result sheet).  We didn't hear the heartbeat for very long, either.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.  I know the waiting to hear the results sucks but I'm sure everything is fine.  2.2mm doesn't sound so bad when they say they like it under 2.5-3.

And in case you're interested, my risk came back at 1:>10,000, which is the best you can get.

Keep us updated on your results!

  • Sounds like your tech sucks! Technically, they only have to do what she did, but usually they let you watch the baby moving for a while and take some nice profile shots for you to have as a souvineer.

Re the number, I have no idea what that means. Sorry. I don't know what our number was. Just that our scan came back 1 in 1,000. Something like that. But even with a bad NT Scan result, you can still have an Amnio. The NT Scan is not at all conclusive. So don't worry - not yet!

  • Yuck.  I'm sorry you had a bad experience :(  I swear some people in the medical field forget that they're dealing with people for chrissakes.  I don't know anything about the measurment.  I don't think I had my NT scan until like 16 weeks or something like that (I honestly can't remember). But if she didn't mention it, I wouldn't worry about it.  One thing you might want to do is make a list of questions before hand and write them down to bring with.  That way you can make sure you cover everything while you're there.

Also, if you're not feeling cared for by your medical people now, chances are it's not going to get better.  You may want to look for another dr.  Is that possible for you?

  • My bubbalub's back-of-neck measurement was between 2.0 and 2.1, which is close to what you got. My results came back something like 1:695 or something (as opposed to 1:250 odd for a woman of my age, which is 35). My GP said this was a great result. However, as Malia said...the tests are NOT diagnostic.

I've heard of women who get a 1 in 8 shot of having a DS baby and have gone on to have a baby WITHOUT Downs Syndrome.

The ultrasound tech woman's bedside manner sucks. Sorry you didn't get a friendlier person! When are you having your next u/s? Ask for someone else for when that happens.

Anyway, try not to stress out. It's hard, I know, but think good thoughts :)

  • I am sorry your tech sucked.  Perhaps you can give a little feedback so they know her bedside manner needs to improve?

I missed my NT Scan altogether due to a scheduling error on the part of my doctor's office.  ARG!  In the end, I let it go, since as the others have said, it's not a diagnostic test but a screening anyway.  I chose to get the Quad Screen Bloodtest where they look for "markers" for DS, Tri18, etc.  Mine came back with great results.  Our Level II Anatomy Scan is this Friday so we'll get a better look...but my doc has also been doing u/s at every appt. since 7 weeks and so far nothing has come up to raise an alarm.  I pray that our luck continues...

Sounds to me like you need to talk the results over with your doc and and get your questions answered.  Can you call her?

  • I'm sorry you had such a bad experience! That's awful!

They had me go to the perinatal unit (for high risk pregnancies) at the hospital b/c I'm 35, so I didn't go to the regular U/S place.  Everyone there was really nice.  The dr did the scan, so I didn't have to deal with a tech (I got to deal with the tech there at 18 weeks - she was a nightmare! Sounds like the one you got here).

I didn't bring DH b/c I thought it was going to be a real quick measurement, but it turned out to be way cooler than the 18 week appt I brought him to.  Ah well.  Anyway, I got to see the baby really move for the first time, and the dr let me watch while he took measurements - he told me the baby was 2 inches, from head to rump and that was good.  He didn't give me any specific measurements about the neck.  I asked how it was, and he said "it looks good".  I think I saw the 2 hemispheres of the brain that day as well, which was pretty cool.

Then one of the nurses took me to do the blood part, and that was pretty quick and I was finished.

When I went in for my 18 week one for all the other measurements, the tech was like yours - sarcastic, not nice, just pushing REALLY hard on my tummy to get the baby to move into position so she could get the measurements.  She couldn't determine the sex or get the heart measurements and something else, so she said we'd have to come back.... but she checked with the dr and he came in and found everything so quickly, but was SO much more pleasant.  Love him.  We didn't get any good pictures from that day either, but I got over it.
