The show Hoarders on A&E

Have you seen this show?

I watched one of the shows this morning with an elderly lady who hoards food. I had to quit watching with fifteen minutes left in the show because I started gagging and had to run to the bathroom. I have a pretty strong stomach. I use to work in a nursing home and a surgical floor. I watch all the medical shows. I couldn't stomach watching this lady clean out her refrigerator. I'm afraid the image is going to be permenantly burned into my brain. I'm hoping I eventually forget. It was so gross.

DH is in the living room watching the show right now because I called him today telling him about it. I didn't stick around to watch again.

  • I haven't watched it before, but I just turned it on thanks to you. Well, probably not "thanks" -- we'll just see how strong my stomach is. :)

  • I think all the shows are a little weird to watch because it is such a crazy disorder. I don't live that way, so I think it is sort of uncomfortable to watch. I have seen one other show and it didn't make me sick to my stomach like the one I described above.

I highly doubt anyone will thank me for bringing this show to their attention. Sorry in advance!

  • I saw that episode, and was seriously sickened.  I could not believe she was trying to hang onto food that was expired by years.  And the fly tape in her dining room?  OMG.  I could not believe all the spoiled and rotten food she had.

  • I just turned it on. We will see how long I can watch.

  • Oh goodness. DH just came into the office and said a new show is on. It's like a bad accident...I know I shouldn't look but I can't resist. I may have to go watch.
  • The Cat Lady.... OMG.

  • I just saw the cat lady. So sad!
  • Oh god watching this show makes me want to live in a minimalist-decor house for the rest of my life and remove anything that remotely looks cluttered around the house...
  • Never heard of the show but my FIL would qualify for sure -- every square inch of the "non-public" rooms of their house are filled less a walking path if your lucky.  They have to move boxes and boxes of stuff if they want to use a room besides the kitchen.  Its ridiculous.

DH and I replaced a toilet for his mom last week and went down the basement to check on the pipes and make sure everything was ok and had to climb over 3' high boxes to get to the water shutoff and then found a giant trash can full of stuff and water up to about an inch below the top.  He asked his dad about it, he said he thought he fixed the pipe a few years ago but didnt want to remove the trash can in case it dripped... seriously, a can full of water for SEVERAL YEARS has sat in their basement??  I'm amazed there weren't bugs everywhere - I'm sure there are things living down there and I just didnt see them.

And they have cats on top of everything else that do not know how to use a litter box - it's no wonder he didnt take me there for the 1st 6 months of our relationship.  I hate going there.

Wow. I can't even imagine having family who are hoarders. That show has never made me want to clean more. I think I'll be totally cleaning out our fridge today. Eek.

  • I love this show!  Maybe its because I'm a psychologist though and crazy people have always fascinated me.  I just think that people's distorted thinking patterns are amazing - its just crazy to see how easily something as basic as logic can get screwed up.

Everytime I have to go over there, it makes me want to come home and throw stuff away.  And thank God I dont have cats.  I'm pretty sure I actually liked cats until I met my in-laws.

  • I feel bad for the cats!  They probably can't FIND their litter box, so they're like ehhh f-it.

Haha... there's really no missing the litter box...  you have to step over it to get to the toilet in the bathroom.  However, if I was the cat I would be pisssed at the house in general as well.

  • I've actually been in a hoarder home like these. We stopped by a yard sale that a daughter was having for her elderly mother that passed away. The poor old lady had made footpaths to every room in her house because she had walls of books and boxes lined up against the walls. You couldnt even see the walls behind the stuff she had accumulated over the years. I absolutely hate clutter so I had to get out of there because I started to feel claustrophobic.
  • Funny you should mention this...H found the show last night and I too was gagging.  I was also commenting how with some of them (most of them actually) the professional organizer and psychologists weren't really helping them get to the actual root of the problem.  The psychologist in one that I saw was good - but 2 days is not enough time & way too much pressure for someone in that state of mind to make a complete turn around!  And...they really weren't focusing on the real behavioral issues.  Interesting/fascinating/gross all at once!
