Anyone live in or been to New Orleans???
We are leaving in 5 days going down to NO to spend the night before we leave on our cruise. I am looking for some must eat places and must sees that we can squeeze in before we leave. Does anyone know of any??? TIA
Re: Anyone live in or been to New Orleans???
I live in New Orleans, and love giving new visitors special places to visit! The cruises leave from the port right outside of the French Quarter so you are definitely in the thick of things. Send me an email to vanessabrown15@gmail.com & let me know where you are staying, how much time you have to see the City & your fav foods!
Hope I can help!
YAY! I saw your post on FB and almost commented there. I am from New Orleans... but moved away in 1995. You'll probably get much better, more current info from Vanilla.
When we go visit, my favorite hotels are the Renaissance Arts and Omni Royal Orleans. Renaissance Arts is in the warehouse/arts district. I lived there while going to college. Love that area! Great restaurants, clubs, art galleries... and you can go to the riverfront park for live music when they have concerts or festivals (check www.nola.com) The French Quarter is fun to roam... lots to see and music dots the streets. It's dirty and touristy... most locals go elsewhere. If you are in it just to see interesting stuff, do it. If you are offended by drunk tourists or dirty streets, go in the daytime just to enjoy the architecture. You are allowed to have drinks on the steet (just no glass). It is fun to grab a drink and walk around. Omni Royal Orleans has a great rooftop bar and pool. Windsor Court has a nice tea. I agree that Cafe Du Monde is a must do. Yum. One of my favorite restaurants is Le Crepe Nanou. Their crab crepe is so delicious. I've never had anything like it. It's not in a great neighborhood - you'd need to take a cab. Worth it. There are tons of good restaurants, from fancy to hole in the wall. I hope you get input from others. I have food allergies, so am pretty limited these days.
I would take the streetcar down St. Charles and have drinks at the Columns Hotel.
Have fun! It is a great city to explore.

When you respond to her, will you post here as well? I'm always interested in what's going on. My friends are old with little kids, so not exactly the best source.
I will be going to New Orleans in October as a photographer for the Voodoo Experience.

Oh yes! This is exactly what I was going to say. Just don't wear BLACK when you go. Cafe due Monde is right next to Jackson Square and the Cathedral, which is a great photo op. I also love the stores right near there that sell Pralenes. Yum!

I agree with Cafe Du Monde, ya GOTTA have some beignets and some chickory coffee!
My VERY first go-to place, whenever I go to New Orleans, is a small, tucked away hamburger joint called The Port Of Call.
http://portofcallnola.com/
It's not a known tourist spot...at least, it wasn't a known tourist spot when I last went there. It's a place the locals TRIED to keep secret and all go to eat there. Ya must, must, must try the burgers there (if you're not vegetarian, that is lol). Along with the burger, you get a baked potato that is pretty yummmm too. Lots of carbs, yeah, but man it's worth it!
They also do an awesome drink called The Monsoon. Beware, it can pack a punch so make sure you drink it whilst/after eating!
I always get the burger/potato and Monsoon. Apon arrival in NO, the plane is barely touching the tarmac before I'm hailing a cab to that joint lol.I'm drooling just thinking of that place.
The couple of places I've stayed at whilst in New Orleans are:
International House Hotel - http://ihhotel.com/ Loved it! Very nice hotel. We stayed here for our last New Orleans trip, during which my husband proposed.
Ashtons Bed & Breakfast - http://www.ashtonsbb.com/ Divinely furnished rooms and owned by a lovely couple. I stayed in the Creole Queen room, which was soooo beautiful. Downside is that it's about a 20 min walk to where all the action is (Bourbon St etc) and is in a...not GREAT area of New Orleans.
Oh and, out of the blue I know...but if you want to get a tattoo whilst in NO then Electric Ladyland is your place
That's where I got my last tatt done.
Ohhhh, I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to do that! As a whole, that city is a photographer's dream to photograph.
My little inner-world dream has been, for a lonnnng time, to live in NO and write and photograph. I would earn money to support this dream by working nights or days working as a waitress or bartender. The bar job (or the like) would actually add to the experience for me anyway. Would provide great fodder for the writing lol.
Make sure to showcase your photos when you come back! Can't wait to see 'em!
This. definitely.

Surfinbride - this is what I sent over the Robin. Feel free to contact me when it gets closer to Voodoo & I will let you know if I hear of anything new!
I am not sure where you are staying but guessing even if you are not staying in the French Quarter, you will definitely visit there during your short stay. I 100% agree with the fellow Nesties about Cafe Du Monde (beignets -- "french doughnuts") are delicious & a great snack or breakfast.
During the summer, many of the restaurants around the City offer Summer Specials & offer a COOLinary menu. It is a really great opportunity to eat for cheap at the pricer restaurants. We actually ate at BACCO on Sunday & took advantage of their special & it was VERY good. The lobster ravioli was amazing! Here is the website that lists most of the specials. http://www.nomcvb.com/restaurants//listings/index.cfm/catId/2/sectionID/1/subsectionID/8/
Muriel's is another very popular Quarter restaurant & in Jackson Square (beautiful & right by St. Louis Cathedral). I have never been to the restaurant, but they have catered a couple of events I have been to & their food was excellent. Goat cheese crepes...OMG! They also have a Coolinary menu.
Frenchman St. is right outside the heart of the Quarter & they have a lot of options too & it is definitely a funky, local area. Adolpho's is probably my fav restaurant on Frenchman. Snug Harbor is also right there & it is a lot like Port of Call (burgers) but they often have live music upstairs. Port of Call has kind of become a little touristy & it is a little too dirty for me. (you could walk from Quarter...but it would be a long walk!)
Right past Frenchman is the Marigny area & Elizabeth's is there. Very much a locals only place. Known for their breakfast & brunch, but I think there dinner is great too. (But definitely take a cab here...too far to walk from Quarter)
Sushi - definitely Rock N' Sake (Warehouse district)
Also the Roosevelt Hotel just reopened since the storm & it was refurnished as it looked when it was orginally built way back when. They even have the Sazarec Bar reopened (where the drink was invented - Sazarec is the official drink of the city). John Besh also just opened his italian restaurant there Delmonica - haven't been yet, but I think just about anything Besh does is great.
And if you have any extra time, definitely take the street car down St. Charles Ave (Royal St. turns into St. Charles at Canal St.) Just such a beautiful ride.
We spend a lot of a our time downtown & in the Quarter. We tend to stay off of Bourbon, but I love Royal St. It is so beautiful down there. Also make sure you walk to the river (though I guess you will see a lot of that from the ship!)
