Refinishing/re-staining oak cabinets

Who has done this?  Who has photos and tips to share?  I really dislike the cabinets we have and they are in all bathrooms and the kitchen.  I thought I would try to do some type of re-finish on them and try it in the bathroom to see how it comes out.

Re: Refinishing/re-staining oak cabinets

  • I refinished/restained the light oak vanity that is in our master bathroom.  PIB.  I also repainted the same type oak in our powder room.

I first took the door panels and hardware off.  then I used a palm sander to sand the cabinets and doors down.  You dont need to sand them down to bare wood...it just needs to be enough to get the old shiny, poly coat off so the new stain can soak in.  After sanding I used the brush attachment on our dyson to clean the wood dust off, then wiped them down with a very slightly damp cloth.  Allow to dry.  Then I started with my first coats of stain.  I used a rag and a regular brush to apply the stain but I would recommend either a rag or foam brushes for applicaton.  I didn't wipe off between coats of stain because I wanted the finish to be extremely dark so I allowed extra drying time then applied additional coats until it was as dark as I wanted.  Final steps were applying poly coat to protect the finish.  I think I did 3 coats of poly and you might need to use fine sand paper to lightly sand between coats of poly.

I used Minwax stain and poly.  There are also combination stain and poly products available where its all in one step.

HTH...if you have more questions just let me know!

  • I restained my bathroom vanity that was dark oak. I sanded, stained in minwax dark walnut, then used rub on poly.  The door is real wood so I used the oil based stain for that.  The sides are some type of cheap veneer and wouldn't take the stain so I got walnut gelstain.  It came out great.  Pardon the ugly floor in the pic.  My next little DIY project.

  • oh yeah, the sanding was a PIA, not hard, just time consuming.  I did sand to bare wood because I read you were supposed to.  Not sure that was totally necessary though.
