about Ethan's ongoing sleep issues.
It was good. He seemed like a great pediatrician. He took our concerns very seriously and had some concerns of his own.
Ethan hasn't gained weight in a long time and I wasn't too worried about it since he's so healthy-looking and eats very well. My mom assured me it was just because he's so active (which the doctor said could very well be the case). But recently I've been more concerned about that as his weight has plummetted from a healthy 50th percentile to a more worrisome 10th (he hasn't lost weight, he just hasn't gained). His height is at the 20th. One thing I didn't know, which seemed to worry the doctor, is that his head circumference is a surprising 97th. The doctor said that this vast a difference in proportion could be cause for concern. Another cause for concern is that his fontanelle (soft spot) is still fairly large, and the doctor thinks that it should be smaller at this age.
So the doctor has ordered an ultrasound on his brain, and many many blood tests looking for cancer markers, thyroid, vitamin deficiencies, growth hormones, and a ton of other things. Hopefully we'll get some answers, although the doctor did say, like our family doc said, that even if we find something we may not be able to treat it at this age ![]()
We got the blood tests done today and he was such a trooper! He didn't even wince. He seemed completely comfortable, we were all shocked.
We also saw a behavioural therapist today, to see if there is anything we could work on, but both she and the pediatrician felt that there was nothing we could really do, that we're doing everything "right".
One thing that really concerned me is that the pediatrician spent a lot of time going over our family mental health history... I hope he doesn't think this is a sign of impending mental illness
He did say, though (maybe just to make me feel better!) that Ethan seems like a very intelligent little boy and that maybe his intelligence is proportional to his head size. I hope so, lol!
So that's my update. Hopefully we find some answers that are fixable. I have to admit the head size thing kind of threw me for a loop. What could that even indicate?
Re: Back from doc #6
Keep up your hard work!
Glad to hear someone finally took you seriously! Don't quote me on this, but a friend of mine told me that large head circumference can be an indication for austim. But I'm obviously no expert. Maybe google it to check it out?
I hope you get all the answers you were looking for! HUGS!
So glad that you feel like your concerns are finally being addressed. Good for you, for being the squeaky wheel! That is going to benefit your son greatly throughout the rest of his life.
I hope that these tests give you the answers you want and either lead you to a resolution or give you peace of mind that everything is okay.
I agree with this 100%. Can you imagine if you just listened to the doctors who kept brushing the problem back under the rug?
I know it must be tricky to go through thinking about what could potentially be wrong. I'm thinking of you and we're here for support. I really hope that these tests will lead you to the answer! This pediatrician sounds like he's on the ball!
I'm glad to hear that you have finally foound a Dr who is taking your concerns seriously. The larger head percentile would concern me a bit too but try not to worry until the results come back. Since your DS seems to be a normal active healthy boy, then chances are that he just has a big head that his body will grow into once you manage to get the sleep issues under control and he is able to gain more weight and height.
So happy to hear that you found a doctor that is taking your concerns seriously - finally! Sounds like some pretty intense topics were disucussed - I hope you're digesting everything okay.
Sending you lots of positive thoughts and hugs!
Thanks for the update!
My thoughts exactly. Keep your head up. Try not to worry too much until there is something to worry about though and we are always here for you.
Thanks everyone, I'll continue to keep you updated...
Yeah, that's something we discussed, autism. The pediatrician and the behaviourist both touched on it, and both think it's highly unlikely, although he does show several signs for it (sleeping issues similar to his are common in kids with autism, and the larger head is indeed indicative of it). But both of them said that he was so intelligent, so ahead in all his developmental markers, had great language acquisition and learned to speak so early, and had great "play skills" and secure attachment to those around him- both of them said that it would be "shocking" if he developed autism (I think one of them actually used the term "zero chance" of regressing that much to have autism). So I hope they're right. At the very least, maybe he'd just have a more mild case of it?
I'm so glad that you're seeing this doctor!! He sounds like he gives a rip and knows what he's doing. Fantastic.
Take some deep breaths. Know you're in good hands. Leave Dr Google alone. And hope/pray that you get some answers - and that those answers give some neat and tidy solutions.
