Hoarders!

Does anyone watch this A&E show? I find it fascinating and sad all at the same time. I am a big time pack rat and I find that I can get attached to lots of "stuff", but these folks blow me away. Did anyone see the woman last night with the cats?! Insanity!

Re: Hoarders!

  •  I don't watch the show, but my mom had a problem with hoarding - not garbage or anything like that, but buying dozens and dozens of cds, books, knick nacks, you name it.  It was one of the consequences of her dementia.

It is so sad to see.

  • I am totally hooked on this show. It is fascinating and repulsive both at the same time.

Last night's show with the cats was scary. How did she think that she was taking care of them when so many of them were dead?

  • I love these shows.  It makes me realize how simple it is to go from a "oh maybe one day I'll need that" to having a serious issue with letting things go.  I see a lot of my family in all these people and use it as a way to keep myself in check.  I find the psychology behind the disease fascinating.
  • I watched the show last night with the cats. It was really sick. DH can't watch the show with me and has to leave the room.

My grandmother is a pack rat/hoarder (although not as bad as the people on the show). I find it really emotional to watch the show b/c I'm thinking of her.

  • I love that show! I am 2 weeks behind right now though.

I keep alot of things for a variety of reasons and this show is kinda forcing me to purge a little more than I normally would  - which is a good thing I figure.

I'm the same way. I hear them making the same kind of justifications for keeping things that I do. The whole thing must be so overwhelming. Without those crews, how would they do it?

  • Even with those crews they don't get them done. I have only seen the one with the man in the apartment that actually got it done and (IMO) really wanted to change his ways.

I can't imagine how hard it must be after so many years to have to change to dramatically - but for some of them I wonder how they don't get sick with what must be growing in their kitchens!

Now I'm excited to go home and watch an episode or two!

  • I saw it for the first time the other night and couldn't get over it!! I can't imagine having that much stuff and not even being able to move around in your own home! It's nuts! I've been known to save things too... but not to that extreme! It is fascinating and sad all at the same time though, I do agree with you there.
