Who watched it last night?
All I have to say is GO TAPPERS!!! I literally got chills when Ryan Kasparzak (sp?) danced, and the tap duel was awesome!! And Ryan's roommate was amazing too.
I love tappers! I used to love tap when I was in dance school - I hope that the exposure it gets on this season (hopefully at least ONE of these tappers makes it through!) gives it a resurgence in dance schools across the country. I know it's kind of loosing it's following, what with the contemporary and hip hop being the "cool" dance classes to take.
Re: SYTYCD - new season!
I watched as well! But i wish it were a 2hr season premiere...i can watch good dancing all night!! And the bad dancing? Well, it's just kind of entertaining.
I'm actually on the fence about tap. I've taught it to 3-6yr olds and i've done tap dances in recitals. But i'm terrible at it, so it's not my thing! But i do know how incredibly difficult it is to be that coordinated, so i respect it! I'm glad we saw Ryan in Vegas being able to do other styles as well. I think it's going to be hard for tappers to make it in to the top 20 cuz they aren't seen as being as versatile as the others. But i want them to prove us/me wrong!!

I think Ryan proved he was versatile enough to make it on the show last season. Honestly, I wanted him to make it through over Evan; I think Ryan is the stronger dancer/entertainer. So, I really, really hope he gets through this time. And he is 29 - it's his last chance because the age cut off is 30 (don't think I have been super depressed that this was the last season I could have tried out for, because by season year I'll be 30......
). And it looks like his friend is a very versatile dancer as well (they were on tour together, so they had to do styles other than tap).
I am no where near the tapper any of these people are, obviously - and I think that is because the tap that is taught in dance schools ("hop, step, flap, balchange!") is not the tap that is AWESOME...the Savion Glover style tap. You really need to love tap and to *feel* the music to dance like that - you don't get that in dance schools where tap is taught mostly because everyone feels like they *should* learn tap, and no one is encouraged to *feel* anything because uniformity is necessary for the recital dances...I wish I tapped like these guys, but my "dance school" tap is far from it!
I agree.
But why was i thinking the cutoff age was 30? I was somewhat daydreaming that i'd get in shape and audition for the next season...but i know i wouldn't!!
I auditioned for The Rockettes about 7yrs ago (omg was it that long ago?!), hoping i could get a spot as one of their 'dancers', not necessarily as a Rockette. And i went to the 'dance' audition, not the Rockette audition. But they still asked us to do tap and i failed miserably!!
Then i tried to take an adult tap class a few years back and even though the teacher was *amazing* i just got too frustrated with myself. Especially when my classmates who were slightly younger than me were way better!
But i still have my tap shoes.
