Observation/Question- potentially flameful

I have known/heard of a few people in my life that have gotten surgery to help with their weight loss.  One was really over weight but she never did anything (from what I saw) to get rid of the pounds.  She ate like crap and i never heard of her exercising.  She got the surgery, has lost a bit of weight but is still on the overweight side.

Another person i know is scheduled for surgery next month.  She isn't nearly as overweight as the person above but like her situation, I always hear her say things on FB like, oh I ate this for lunch/dinner.  Maybe I should exercise, nope the couch won instead.

I unerstand that some people really NEED the surgery.  However, I feel like doctors/people in general are far too quick to take this as an option.  In my opinion, it's not an option but rather a last resort.

I agree wholeheartedly.  If I'm fat, I know why.  I realize not everyone has this luxury because it's partially genetics, etc, but at the same time, I know what I shove in my mouth and how often I don't workout.

I personally feel modern medicine jumps in too quickly with their answers and doesn't question, push, or challenge patients on some procedures as they should.

I agree with you both.  Especially Paula's point of modern medicine of jumping in too quickly to prescribe this or that pill or this or that surgery...when I agree that surgery, especially should be a LAST resort.  I also know genetics plays a role in why some people are overweight, but I do also feel like that is used as an excuse rather than a reason to maybe push a bit harder to make sure you don't allow it to get out of hand.

This reminds me of what the Dr gave me as an option. I'm avoiding putting her off because my only next option is surgery, even if it is just laparascopy.  I could care less about the surgery (after all, I've spent 6 years trying all the other options), but the mandatory drugs I'd have to be on post-surgery most likely is what makes me respond "I'll just suck it up, thanks... it's not life-threatening." LOL

  • I completely agree with you. I am overweight and have a good amount I need to lose. My cousin who was maybe 50lbs heavier than me had gaystric bypass. She lost over a 100lbs. to me she looks kind of sick, had lots of side affects and she never learned how to eat healthy! I would rather do it the old fashioned way, even if it takes me years.
  • I agree.  It's so much "easier" to cut someone open and get a quick fix in than to make a permanent change that will require work and facing your deamons, sometimes (a lot of times) many of which are psychological.  I think the key is to have a good doctor and a lot of accountability - both of which very few people have.  It's easy to lie to your doctor and say "Yes, I'm eating healthy, balanced meals and working out 4-5x a week," when in reality you're eating gigantic portions of ceasar salad and mindlessly spinning on an elliptical.  Your doctor's not with you 24/7 to know you're lying and you're telling yourself that you're doing everything "right" but not losing weight....time for the surgery.
Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

  • I was hoping for something really flameful...but I agree with you!

I have a friend who had the lapband surgery (I think that's what it is called).  She was overweight.  She needed something.  But IMO I think she needed some aerobics classes and a dietician.  She's having some horrible side effects from the surgery now and, even though she has lost a ton of weight, it's just not healthy.
