What Were You Doing on 9/11?

I can't believe it's been 8 years!!

I was sleeping and a friend called and woke me up, screaming into the phone that NYC was being attacked and planes were flying into the WTC.

I remember turning on the news while I was lying in bed and was just horrified by what I was looking at.  I called my dad and my sister - neither had any idea that it was going on. I remember saying to my sister, "we're going to war".

I was supposed to be on a flight on 9/12 for Michigan for a friend's wedding. Obviously the flights were cancelled and I spent the next 3 days rescheduling flight after flight after flight and finally got out on Friday (I was determined to NOT give in to the terrorists and cancel my trip).  I was on the very first flight out of Oakland Airport after they re-opened.  I had a layover in Chicago and there were TONS of military personnel walking around with their guns - it was pretty scary!

I was just thinking that I haven't even seen anything on the TV about a memorial or any special news program about it this year...how sad...

  • I was at work. We were held on property for hours before security decided we could leave. I headed straight home but got all freaked out watching the news so I headed down the street to the coffee house and hung out there watching the news.
  • The scariest part for me was that a few weeks later we had to fly to NJ for a funeral and there were U.S. Marshalls on our plane. There were probably about 10 people on the plane. They called one of the marshalls back up to the gate, and when he came back the female marshall asked him what was going on. He said that they had a question about one of his weapons. When I heard that I went Indifferent then realized I was probably safer with them on board.
  • I was in college and my first class wasn't until like 12 so I slept through it. I woke up and watched the news a little bit and had to go to class.

  • I was still living at home and didn't have to be at work until noon. My mom banged on my door saying that the US had been attacked. I remember thinking that she couldn't be right or was exagerating. I got into the livingroom in time to watch the second tower fall. It was absolutly unbelievable, I remember not being able to comprehend what was actually happening at first. It was very strange. I spent the rest of the day watching the news until I had to go to work (Mervyn's wouldn't close, though we had a total of two cusomers that whole day). I just remember spending pretty much the rest of that week in shock.

I can't believe its been 8 years either. I remember last year TMZ interviewing people leaving the Hollywood clubs at 1am and asking them about 9/11. Most of them barely remembered it happened in their lifetime. Sometimes I just want to smack the stupidity out of people. Here at the base were are having a memorial tomorrow. And the base fire dept usually does something as well.

  • I was asleep when my room mates mom called the house, around 6 or so and told me to turn on the news. When I saw what was going on, I called Dh (boyfriend at the time) cause I knew he was going in early that day. Turns out he had just stopped in the breakroom for a sec and it was on the tv in there. We watched for it together for awhile. Till I had to go to work. I remember trying to calm down my manager who's brother lived in NY. Because of the mess with the phone lines she couldn't thru to him and was freaking out the whole day. The brother and his family ended up being fine.

And I remember thinking just how short life could be and deciding to tell DH that I love him.

  • I just know that when we have kids and they are older, they will have an assignment in school where they will need to ask their parents or someone who was alive at the time what they were doing when it happened. My poor kid: ya, mom slept through it.

I know I can still say I experienced watching it replayed on tv, but I feel like it might have been different if I had been awake for at least part of it. I think I woke up around 10:30 and that was because my roomates had finally returned from class.

  • I was in college and had a dreaded history class that morning that I had decided to skip and sleep in instead. I woke up a little bit later to get ready for my next class and while I was in the shower, my roommate banged on the door to tell me what happened. We turned the tv on in time to watch the second tower fall. The school didnt cancel classes which seemed ridiculous and while most teachers went ahead and canceled their classes, mine professors didnt so I had to go to class for the rest of the day.
  • It was my freshman year of college and I still ived at home. I didnt have class on Tuesdays so I got to sleep in. I think I wouke up around 6 to go to the bathroom or something and I wandered into my mom's room and saw it on TV. I seriously thought it was a movie. At that point only 1 plane had hit and they still didn't know what exactly happened. I spent the rest of the day watching Tv. I could not believe my eyes when they fell - I had been there just a few years earlier. I <3 NY!
  • I just remember waking up in the morning to my mother sitting on the couch crying. I was in college at the time and didn't have class that day. It was so scary to watch the tv coverage...my heart broke...

  • Robyn-You're so right. When I was a Junior we had to ask 5 different family members who they thought killed JFK. I think that I will expect this question from my children.

I was in college. I was up and getting ready for class. I never turned the TV on in the morning but decided to turn it on so I could find out the weather. And it was a picture of the first tower. Then as I was watching the second tower was hit. I went to class and was so angry at my math teacher for going on business as usual. My next class was Political Science. He let us out so we could go to the student union and watch TV. Which I did. The rest of my classes carried on pretty much business as usual.

Really?? I can't believe you had class that day. I thought most colleges closed, CSUF did. I also worked at the mall at the time and they closed early too.

  • The administrations view was that the terrorists purpose other than killing a bunch of people was to disrupt our lives, so we continued on with classes as if nothing happened. They even specifically told the profs do not cancel class. When questioned about it, they said we would have a candle light prayer memorial that evening.

I was at Fullerton Junior College at the time. A lot of teachers cancelled classes but mine didn't.

  • Wow, 8 years. *sigh*

I went into the break room to clock in & everyone was gathered around the tv. The first tower had already been hit, and I witnessed the 2nd. It was horrific. They made us go to work & eveyone was upset. I called my mom who was still in bed. :p She lived in L.A. at the time, and had no idea. My brothers were at school & I was freaking out because the news was buzzing about L.A. being the next target.

Crazy, I was only 18 then.

  • I remember waking up and turning on the news with my roommate. We saw the 2nd plane hit and the tower fall. I sat staring trying to figure out what the heck I was watching. We sat there for about 30 minutes in silence just staring before it really sank in.

We worked for the City of Burbank at the time, so we went into work, dealt with worried parents (we worked with at-risk youth), and listened to news reports and watched the news all day while trying to get work done.

It was also my college b/f's bday, and I remember he was going out with some friends- I asked him to just stay home with me and we would go to dinner, but he wouldn't cancel to be with me, lol- should have been a sign then!

  • I was a freshman in high school, getting ready for school. I cannot believe it's been 8 years. We watched TV all day long at school that day.

I worked at robmay and we closed early. some of the smaller stores in the mall didn't open at all

  • Omg. A freshman!? I always forget how young you are.
  • I was a senior in high school, and had gotten out of the shower to hear my mom yelling at me to come watch tv. I remember watching the second plane hit while I was dripping wet in a towel. Then I cried when I saw a woman on tv yelling and crying behind the reporters. I went to school and we watched the TV all day. I just remember thinking over and over again, "Why would anyone do this?"
