Threw away some wedding gifts

DH's cousin (she's at least 50) gave us some truly hideous towels from who knows where, no receipt, tags half ripped off, etc. They've sat in the box for weeks now and I finally decided to just throw them away. They were the super decorative towels that were overly embroidered with lots of tassels on the ends so they wouldn't make good cleaning towels either. We considered giving them to one of our moms but they wouldn't have gone with anything else they have either. Is it bad that the only part I feel guilty about is not taking a picture of the ugliness to show you ladies?

Anybody else throw anything away?

  • If you don't feel bad for not taking a picture, I'm going to MAKE YOU feel bad for not taking a picture!

Haven't thrown anything away...returned a lot of items, but no throw aways...there is one item I'm considering chucking soon though...

  • I haven't thrown anything away yet. I have some issues with just throwing away things that are perfectly fine. We'll be taking some things to pawn shop or the salvation army pretty soon though.

  • Thumbs down for no pictoral evidence.

Haven't tossed anything either. Still have to make some returns and also have to think about the lucky recipients who are getting some of extra awesome gifts -- like the sno-cone maker.

  • I did!!

Well I didnt really throw it away but donated a whole bunch of ugly frames with hearts on them and a decorative wall mirror with candle holders to Goodwill. Thats the only thing I could bring myself to do and not feel guilty about it.

At least they will be used by someone else that really does appreciate them even if they had to pay 50 cents. Wink

  • I suppose I could have donated them, but making a trip for two measly and hideous hand towels just wasn't worth it to me. They were super frilly, embroidered and tasseled and couldn't have possibly absorbed any more water than a sheet of Bounty. The other towel (that in no way matched the frilly embroidered tasseled ones) makes an excellent cat towel so I've kept it.

  • There is something to be said for your way. We have so many things we want to donate (wedding gifts and clothes and stuff) that we can't use our guest room AT ALL right now. Every day we plan to sort through the crap and get things under control. We will open a bottle of champagne if it happens.

  • I hear you Zee. I have a growing stack of clothing that needs to be donated but for whatever reason, it just keeps sitting in the back of our closet. The day we dig through it and clean that sucker out will be champagne worthy as well.

  • I sold several gifts at a yard sale we had in July, and gave one to my mother because she liked it and it didn't sell at the yard sale. I have one more that I will never use, but after looking up how much it cost the gift giver, I would feel too guilty to get rid of it.

  • I have a couple of gifts I didn't ask for and would never have bought on my own, but I can't bring myself to throw them away. I think my Aunts must have just given me things they had lying around. Who needs christmas ornaments in June?? But I love my aunts and since they meant well, I'll just keep them and possibly use them way down the line.

  • I think this post might confirm that I am a heartless wench.

  • Haven't done it yet but there is a hideous double invitation frame and cheese platter sitting in our closet in the spare bedroom just waiting to be tossed.  Or re-gifted as a gag gift when my one of my friends gets married (which is probably why I haven't tossed them yet)
  • I would have thrown away towels, too. I sold a Lenox photo album and a bunch of serving dishes.

  • We'll be donating some candle holders and cliche cheap wedding frames to DAV before we move.  We'll never use them, and I see no reason to lug them halfway up the eastern seaboard.

  • I didn't throw it away, but I regifted something. We got a weird ceramic dutch girl leaning on a clock. There was no card or anything with it. I tried to figure out who gave it to us, but have no idea. So I left it in an unmarked bag at my cousin's wedding a few weeks later. They have been going CRAZY trying to figure out who gave it to them (just like we were).

keb -- this happened at our wedding, and we're planning on doing the same thing (in addition to giving them an actual gift, of course) at our friends' wedding this October. I kinda hope it just gets passed along from wedding to wedding...

  • I totally agree. I want to eventually tell them to make sure they keep passing it around =)
  • We returned some things from the wedding and/or exchanged them.  I DID throw away a couple things from my shower though - one being a "nighty" if you will that my Dad's aunt used to wrap a gift card in.  It looked like it was straight out of the 1960s and had probably been worn by her (considering parts of it were frayed and there were no tags).  I'm set w/that thanks.  The other was a HUGE thong that I knew would fall off and I knew that I couldn't donate it...
