Immature Question

I'm seeing a doctor next week for my annual exam (she's a primary care physician). Over the past year I have had some serious flight anxiety- I want to ask if she would prescribe me xanax (or something like it) for my flight back to CO in two weeks. Is that awkward or bad? I've never been prescribed a medication like that before so I don't know if it's something you are able to just ask for or if she'll look at me like I'm crazy (since I know how habit forming it can be).

Re: Immature Question

  • I think the best thing to do would be to explain it to her just like you did to us -- tell her about your anxiety, how it's grown, and how it is flight specific. Ask what (if any) medical course of action she would reccommend and could help you take. She can take it from there.

  • I think it's perfectly fine to ask.  My mom and sister both developed some flight anxiety that just kept getting worse, and flew to AK last summer (we live in NH).  They both talked to their PCP (same one which worked out well) and she prescribed a low dose of something.  My mom said it was perfect, just took the edge off and made flying a lot easier for both of them.

  • Well, what you really want is relief from flight anxiety, not a scrip for hot drugs, so I wouldn't worry about asking for it.  I'm sure whatever company makes xanax has paid hundreds of thousands of dollars so that you would ask for it by name.  And if you explain your problem to her as you did to us and she prescribes something else that may be milder but it works, it's nonetheless a win.
