Vent: Why can't clothing sizes be uniform!?!

As I was getting dressed this morning and trying on different pants that all "sort of" fit, I realized the disparity in my wardrobe with regard to sizes....

My pants from the Gap are size 4s.  But my Gap jeans are 6 curvy. (and one of those is SUPER tight)

My pants from Ann Taylor Loft are 6's.

My pants from Express are 8's.  8's were the only ones that fit over my thighs, but they are big at the waist and need to be taken in.  Except for one pair of size 8's which fit fine and are not big at all.

My DKNY jeans are a 4.

My Victoria's secret size 4's no longer fit over my butt, but I haven't bought a size 6 yet to see if they would work.

How can it be that I range from size 4 to size 8??  Why do we not have some sort of clothing system where each size is a certain measurement and that is it!?!  And how can I be two different sizes in pants from the same company!?!?

I just don't get it.  Is it completely arbitrary or is there some kind of system that just makes no sense?

Re: Vent: Why can't clothing sizes be uniform!?!

  • Lol, i'm the same way! Although i can get up in to the size 10's...which don't make me feel good, but then i realize that each *store* is different! But i was super excited when the dress i bought for our rehearsal dinner last year from Banana ended up being a size *6*! Woo hoo! I never thought that'd happen! I thought i'd be a 10 or 12 at Banana!!

Also, on our honeymoon we went outlet shopping and i bought 2 very similar pairs of jeans from J Crew. As soon as we get home to Brooklyn, only one pair fits and the other one doesn't! Yet they fit in the store! I still haven't worn them after suffering thru a day of work with those super tight jeans on. Sad

  • When you get an answer to that question, let me know. I have pants/jeans ranging in size from 8 to 12 in my closet right now! Tongue Tied

    ditto!

i totally understand why stacy & clinton tell everyone to make friends with their tailor on what not to wear

i'm 5'4 so i have the added fun of sometimes being able to do petite/ankle length and sometimes having to get regular then have pants hemmed. and as with sizes, the lengths vary from store to store too. ?

  • The jeans I am currently wearing are my (regular size) size 10. When I received them last xmas as a gift I couldn't fit into them even though that is 'my size' at banana republic. Now that i've lost a little weight, I can wear them, but still. I feel your pain!

  • I hear ya.  It doesn't help that alot of the big chains (I'm looking at you, J Crew) seem to continue down the "vanity sizing" path more and more each season.  Um, I am a size two all of a sudden, even though I've gained weight?  No, I am not!  I feel badly for all of the truly slender/petite women out there who must have a hell of a time finding clothes at some of these places anymore!

  • Yes, indeed.  My gripe is the vanity sizing making it so that I don't even know what sizes I am sometimes. I always take 2 or 3 sizes into the dressing room.
