WWYD?

Scarlett's poop was blue. ?I took her to the doctor and he said that it was too much iron and to get a formula that was low to no iron. ?I found one and she has had that for a weekish. ?I had noticed before that she only pooped blue if she ate bananas so I figured that if I held of the bananas for a couple of days while she was getting used to the new formula it would be okay. ?She stopped pooping blue. ?I reintroduced them this week and her poop is blue again today. The doctor told me to take a sample in to him immediately if it happened again. ?The problem is his office is closed on Fridays. ?I don't really want to keep the sample in my fridge over the weekend and if I take away the bananas today she will be pooping a normal colour tomorrow.

She doesn't seem in distress so I was thinking I could give her bananas on Sunday so that on monday I have a fresh sample I can take in. ?I dunno though. ?He didn't say if it was bad for her or not just that he wanted a fresh sample. ?I am afraid that maybe she might be allergic to bananas and I don't want to risk anything... ?I dunno what would you do?

Re: WWYD?

  • There is a lot of confusion about food allergies and intolerances.  An allergy is an immunological response - like hives, anaphylaxis etc. whereas an intolerance is a GI type response - like lactose intolerance.

I wouldn't worry too much about an allergic reaction if you've given her the banana many times and she hasn't had a reaction.  If she's not fussy or uncomfortable after eating it, I'd be tempted to give it to her on Sunday so you can take a sample in.  If it were me, I'd want to know what was causing it and it sounds like the only way to do so is to give her the banana.

Good luck and hope it's nothing serious.

  • This is my 2 cents. When Dani had Rotavirus, her poop was a bluey fluid.

The pediatrician said it indicated her stomach lining was being aggravated and stripping off a bit.

    Is it fluid or solid?

It's not an allergy, bc like Amy said, it would be an immunological response (ie. hives, anaphylaxis, etc), but indeed it could be an intolerance.

I'd get the fresh sample - if she's not agitated, I'd give her the bananas on Sunday to get the sample you want.

OR do what I did when she had Rotavirus. Take the most recent blue poop diaper, seal it up in double ziploc bags and store it in the fridge (ew, but that's what pedi said to do).

No worries babe! I'm sure it can't be serious if she's not showing signs of distress!
