My favorite lines:
Mr. Tanner: Cute becomes dumb in an instant, Miss Bennett.
and
Stefan: Isn't the crow a bit much? Damon: You should see what I can do with the fog.

Okay. So. At first, I totally wanted to hate it (around Comic Con time). I refused to watch trailers or previews or even entertain the idea of subjecting myself to it. Then, they started in with the whole "From the creator of Dawson's Creek..." which is, admittedly, my Achilles heel. Then, at the mall, I see the totally Dawson-esque love triangle poster with the awesome tag line "Love Sucks". Fine, you got me again Kevin Williamson, it's on my TiVo.
Once I wrapped my head/heart around the whole Dawson's Creek + Twilight = Vampire Diaries concept, I was stoked. I wanted to love it. I've been in need of a good guilty pleasure for some time.
I went out, bought some chinese food (my favorites - cream cheese wontons, kung pao chicken...), came home and settled in to watch the Pilot. And now, I kinda want the last hour of my life back.
Don't get me wrong, Joella and Deadward (Joey+Bella=Elena; Dawson or Pacey+Edward=Stefan) were actually quite compelling. Well, compelling aside from the whole "I write in a journal too" "Oh my goodness, I must be in love with him!" scene in the graveyard (insert CW appropriate melodramatic eye roll here).
There were some definite moments of that old Dawson wit creeping in, which was nice. Damon (demon? Damien? Please, could we not have given him a better name?!?!) seems like he'll be interesting. I mean, to be fair, both vamps are totally hot and the actors playing them are actually of an age where it's not creepy to think so (the actor playing Stefan is 27; Damon is 31...and used to be Boone on LOST).
The special effects are cheesy at best and just bad at worst. Pretty much every character aside from the two vamps and Elena are on my "can Damon eat them in the next scene so they shut up?" list. I can't decide where Matt (human -- for now) plays into the story...is he the Mike Newton or the Jacob? The Dawson or the random boys who Joey left heartbroken? I'm not going to believe you if you try to sell me on him being an "original" character.
Still, all the faults and my personal complaints aside, it's still on my TiVo for next week. I think I found a new guilty pleasure after all...

I swear I've read the vampire magic ring thing somewhere before...It's making me crazy that I can't remember.
I had the opposite reaction on the Dawson's connection. I never liked DC, so I was hoping for more Supernatural and less teen angst. The repeated scenes of actual diary writing just killed me. I get that that's the conceit of the show, but maybe a short monologue to open and or close the show... I don't need to see them writing in every other scene.
Liked: Elena's voice... (there's something husky about it that makes it seem like she might say something deep.), Stefan (ditto on the fact that I don't feel like a child molester for thinking he's hot... and he had some noncheesy lines), The goofy aunt trying to be a mom.
Didn't like: the Super Speshal FX (ExtremeFog! CreepyBirds!), that weird girl Elena's brother is in love with (with the huge cheekbones?) I was ready for her to be Damon-food, Elena's confrontation of her much taller brother in the men's room (yay for being a good sister, but something was just off about that whole scene). Damon and everything about him... including the unfortunate affects of caked on makeup in DeadBoone's eye wrinkles (he seems so old!), The stupid cg blood drip on the title card.
I'm now debating about whether Stefan's dreamy backstory is worth the extreme teen angst and cheesy effects. I liked Twilight the book, but the movie was a snooze fest. I haven't read Vampire Diaries yet, but I'm not sure I want to.
Love the Perez info, thanks SBS.
I watched and liked what I saw for the most part. Definitely some cheese factors involved. But I figure I'll give it a couple more episodes and go from there. In a couple weeks there's another show I want to watch in the same time slot, ABC's "Flash Forward." So I may not be watching this show for long if it doesn't suck me in.

This comment on another forum rang so true.
What people nowadays fail to understand is that what is cool about vampires is how apart they are, they are creatures of the night, they don't slip into society easily, nor would they want to. What is NOT cool is a vampire who wants to go to school, hang out with teenagers at a party and write in a flucking diary. I mean holy *** god, way to take away all the fun of vampires and turn them into whiny little biitches!

Absolutely!! We watch CSI: Miami and race to spot the color theme of the show, and we make our own one-liners ala Horatio

Mamie -- whoever wrote the second comment clearly is (or isn't?) a recent vamp fan...I'd say circa Blade or Underworld, at best.
The brooding, "I just wanna eat rats and be nice to the pretty people" vampire has been around at least since Anne Rice's Interview with a Vampire introduced us to Louis de Pointe du Lac in 1974 (book) and again in 1992 (movie). It may have possibly been around earlier than that, but that's as far as I am in my research. Furthermore, older vampire lit DID allow vamps to go out in the sun, attempt to socialize with humans, etc. etc. etc. People really need to quit blaming Twilight and The Vampire Diaries -- if anything, they are a twisted homage of most of the greats that came before them.
If anyone has further questions, they can read my Master's Thesis next summer :-)
Thanks for the history SBS. I knew I could count on you.
I think the latest vamp craze is so popular due to the late 00s emo movement. They just fit together so nicely.
I don't want to wait til next summer for your thesis.

Leigha - I'm applying to UT this fall (Dec. 1 is the deadline). You can apply while you're still working on your M.A. -- actually, it's encouraged.
Mamie/Leigha - My graduation date is May 15, but I can do a "summer defense" on my thesis if I have to. I don't want to...my plan is that the thesis will be done/defended in May, but may take into summer if there's any weird bueracratic delays.
