Traveling to Hi, airline ?
Hey ladies, DH and I decided that we will be able to make it to HI afterall this year!!! We're looking at flights fr Sept 26-30 leaving here and returning 2 weeks later
Which airlines would you recommend? Which ones would you avoid? I feel like it's been so long since we've traveled! Oh and we'll be taking Bella with us (she'll be about 10 weeks). Any suggestions from you mommies about traveling with a newborn? Luckily our condo is open so we'll be able to stay there. Next after booking flights, booking car rental... we can't wait!
Re: Traveling to Hi, airline ?
Yay! We always fly American...at least to Honolulu. As for flying with a baby...my BFFs took their son to France at 2 months and my friend said that BFing kept baby calm and sleepy for the entire trip. She also wore the baby rather than using a stroller (which makes sense on cobblestone streets in France...might make more sense for you too in Hawaii). She also CDs her son, but went with sposies when traveling...it was easier.
You will need a carseat once you arrive, so you can check yours or rent one from your car rental agency. Other than that, make sure you stay hydrated during the flights (especially if you're BFing).
Once there, make sure you have shade when you're on the beach and TONS of sun block for Bella. Have fun!

Be careful, I've heard you can't use sunblock on a baby till they are 6 months. I am going to check with my pedi during our next visit to be sure. Maybe some local mom's will jump in on that one.
I am so happy you get to come. We need to get together with the kids while you are here:-)
yes Renee you are right.. At least that's what my pedi said at her 2 month check up. Their skin is so sensetive that it is not ready for the chemicals in sunblock until 6 months.
Advice, Bella is a creature of habit like Jaylee is make sure you have EVERTHING she will need. We took Jaylee to Lanai for just the weekend and I didn't bring her boppy(I use it EVERYTIME I breastfeed) and I will say it was horrible.. Luckily my friend had an extra, wasn't the same (didn't smell like Jaylee, too soft) so she didn't eat as much.. It killed me....Also someone told me to gate check the carseat, If it didn't make it to Hawaii in the check luggage you would be screwed(can't even leave the airport) just a thought......
I would def gate check car seat/stroller rather than checking it with luggage. It will still get tossed around but won't get thrown off the cart, run over all that stuff. And yes I said run over... this actually happened to our stroller as I watched and then the guy denied the clearly visible tire marks. And this was the very airline my hubby works for. I would also make sure to have some sort of bag or even trash bag to put these items in so they don't get dirty. The bellies of the planes never, ever get cleaned and these things do slide around down there.
Did your doc give you any warning/advice about air travel with a baby so young? We wanted to go to HI when Matty turns 2 months and my doc said we should wait. I would love to know what your doc said and your feelings about it.
My understanding is that if the sun is unavoidable babies under 6 months should wear a chemical-free/barrier sunscreen formulated for babies. Again, do check with your pedi...maybe suncreen fabric hat/top for baby is a better option? Here's a highly recommended suncreen for babies...chermical-free, fragrance-free, etc.:
