Murder Mystery Dinner Party?

Has anyone ever hosted a murder myster dinner party?  I'm thinking this might be a fun idea for a halloween party, but I have no idea how to go about planning one.  Any ideas/suggestions would be awesome!

TIA!

Re: Murder Mystery Dinner Party?

  • Try googling "murder mystery kit".  A few sites offer some for free that you can use for ideas.  Knowing how many guests you plan on inviting will help you choose a scenario as well.

  • Yes, I have hosted murder mystery dinner parties before.  The first one we threw, the guests had instructions to come dressed up.  It gave it a fun element.  The second one people just came how they were and we had a box of props if people wanted to use them, they could.  Both ways worked well, but both guests lists were very different as well.

My only advice to you is to really think about your guest list and invite those who you know will play along.  I have been invited to other parties where people weren't into it and the whole thing fell apart.

Have fun, GL!  and let us know how it turns out!

  • question... i am thinking of doing this as well... does the size of the guest list matter? ?
  • I think it does - from what I've found thus far, the "kit" you buy is for a specific number of people/characters.

My Mom's friend plans murdery mystery parties for a living.  I'm waiting to hear back if she can get any information for me, so I haven't bought anything yet.  (I don't know if that's much help or not!  lol)

  • I think it also depends on the kit used also.  Some are better than others.  I agree that the people invited need to be ones that would get into it and follow along.  That's the most critical part for a succesful murder mystery!

We were going to have one for DHs 30th this past month but things happened and the party didn't. I bought a kit from this website after thoroughly researching different ones.  I'm still planning on having this party eventually, and we're really looking forward to it. They have a forum and other people have posted about their parties and there's lots of great ideas there.

    have fun!
