I'm doing a retelling using a graphic organizer for the fable, The Tortoise and the Hare.
I want to say "The hare layed down" But layed doesn't look right.
So is it, lay down, layed down, or laid down?
Thanks girls!
Re: Grammar question
I actually think it's "laid." Here's why:
Anytime I have grammar questions I go to the Grammar Girl.

Right, so we would be using the past tense of lie, which is lay, because the hare wasn't put down by someone, he did it on his own. Lay requires an object, and there is none, so we would use lie. But we use the past tense, which is lay.
I think...this always gives me a headache! And makes me glad that I'm in the library instead of the middle school class room teaching grammar
Based on the chart, I agree with Lima.
Thanks, Ali, for posting the chart! I always forget the lie/lay rule.
