I can tell you that most of those hats probably came off of Etsy. This photography forum that I visit, has been doing those type of newborn photos for awhile now (meaning before they were on GMA). When asked where the hats came from, it's more often than not etsy.
If DH and I are graced with another baby in the future, I will attempt to do pictures like those (not the hanging ones, DH would not allow that at all) but from the horror stories I read, not all babies like to be posed like that.
I was wondering how cooperative the babies would be. I'm sure it's easier when they are younger and sleep most of the time but some of the positions look a little uncomfortable. Then again they were in a tight space for 9 months!
I guess the key is to get the pictures taken withing the first 2 weeks of their birth. Some of the photographers are taking about 2 hours to get some of those pictures. What they usually do is make sure the baby is nice and fed, in a pretty warm room (using a space heater) and a white noise machine.
The one's with them hanging off the tree limbs are often times photoshopped. They are barely off the ground but just given the illusion of such. Still, I'd be so nervous to try that as a photographer and a new parent.
