Work is getting to be too much (whiny poor me vent inside)

I'm getting annoyed. There was an issue that came up before with work not understanding my school schedule but it is getting to be too much now. There are 2 night time meetings scheduled in the past two weeks and 2 more now in the upcoming two weeks. The first one I couldn't make because of school and my boss was a little upset. The second one she asked me to skip class so I could be there! It worked out with class that we started early so I was able to go.

Today I got a memo that said there are two MANDATORY (that was how it was typed) meetings coming up at the end of September, early October. Both on days I have school.

Even if I didn't have school I go work until 1, go to class until 3:15 and then I have tutoring scheduled Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for me to get my field hours. Then on Tuesdays and Thursdays I have night classes. I couldn't make these meetings if I tried.

What is so annoying to me is that they knew this when I was hired! That's what I don't get. If my going to school was going to be a problem they shouldn't have hired me.

Needless to say I have a feeling I am going to be let go if I don't make these two meetings and I'm not even really worried about it at this point. I can't take the guilt trips anymore. I only hope I can find something in the meantime.

Any job vibes or prayers you have would be greatly appreciated. I'm sorry to complain and I may DD this later just in case but I needed to get that out there.

  • Don't DD. It's a valid complaint. I know you're so delicate you won't say anything Wink but you're exactly right when you say it's their problem. When you interviewed, you told them your school schedule. And they agreed. Their problem - not yours.

I would start looking for something else. GL!

  • Definitely don't stress over it, but I'd start looking for something else.  They have issues that aren't your problem!

  • School is you number one priority, period. If they can't work around your schedule, then it just isn't going to work. It's really hard to find a job that works with the program you're in - believe me I remember all too well. And as much as it sucks it's going to get even worse. When you start methods (next semester?) you have to go every day and you have to go in the mornings. It completely and totally sucks. BUT in the end you will be so prepared for a teaching job and when you graduate and get your first class it will be amazing. Just keep your eyes on the prize, it's all you can do!

I believe I start methods next semester, I am taking the Praxis this fall and EDUC 307 (?) in the Spring. I think that SLU's teacher education program should have the same rule that law school has that you can't work over a certain amount of hours a week. I feel like I'm in law school and I'm not!

I am so excited though because while work has been horrendous I have loved my classes. I am learning so much and now that I'm in so many education classes I am even more excited to graduate. It's definitely been a ton of work but I know I will leave SLU more than prepared for my own classroom one day. Now I just need to find a job to understand that :)

  • Belle, your getting to the point where, like you said, you have more and more education classes on your schedule, and nothing else. It starts becoming a lot of fun, and a lot of work.

As for your job now, Jenn had good advice.  Your job knew it when you were hired. They should just suck it up and deal with it, or schedule the meetings around your schd.

  • My first reaction was to see if you could talk to your boss about things but after pondering this for a few moments, I don't think that's the answer.

You were upfront, you have done your part, don't even waste your time on trying to reason with them.
