NYC suggestions

MH and I will be heading to New York in a few weeks for our AHR thrown by his parents (his family is mostly there).  We are at a loss for what to do while we're there!  We originally wanted to see a show, but the $120 per person (then even more fees!) price tag will probably prevent us from doing that.  Beside, Shrek will in Chicago soon, and it's usually only about $85 here.  We'll probably check TKTS, but I don't have my heart set on it.

So......any other suggestions of what to do? I've been there twice before, and we've done Empire State, skating at Rockefeller, Central Park carriage ride....lots of typical toutisty stuff.  MH is an amatuer photographer, and I'm pretty content just wandering and exploring the city for the most part.  But we might like to have a little bit of a plan.  We'll be there 2 1/2 days (the AHR is a Saturday luncheon at Tavern on the Green) .....any thoughts?

Re: NYC suggestions

  • One of my favorite views of NY is actually from NJ.  When you're in NY, it's hard to get a perspective because everything is just SO huge!  But if you drive through the tunnel (either the lincoln or the holland) into West New York (which is actually in NJ) and up to Boulevard East, you get to see the sky line from the other side of the Hudson River. It's really a spectacular view. ESPECIALLY at night!

I'd also make sure i got over to Little Italy & China Town (which are right next to each other).

Arrived 4.5 weeks early due to PROM

  • im a huge show person...trying finding tickets online and you dont necessarily need to sit in the orchestra, which is where the 120 comes in.  there are cheaper seats in the back.  there is always a lot of stuff at the tkts booth, so check it out.  i just like to walk around time square and shop and eat!  our fave deli is stage deli on 51st and 8th i think is the address.  they have the best cheesecake and awesome, huge deli sandwiches!  :)

but mainly soak it all in and do a lot of people watching!

  • We're also going up to NYC in a couple of weeks. We'll only be there for the weekend though. We're watching a Filipino musical called "Imelda". Anyway, I normally buy tickets to Broadway/Off-Broadway shows online. I have gotten very good deals on shows when ive bought tickets the day before or day of the show. I just google and get discounted tickets. We also go there to EAT lol. They are soo many good places to eat around there..a weekend is not enough. Have fun!
  • My MOH lives in NYC.  I've been twice to see her.  Here are some of the touristy things we did:
    - Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge
    - Do the Circle Tour boat ride
    - Do the Sex and the City Tour
    - Ate at Serendipity 3
    - Ate at Katz Deli (I think that's what it's called - from When Harry met Sally)
    - Ate at the Carnegie Deli (we did that on the last day both times so that I could get a freezer packed cheesecake to take home - mmmmm!)
    - Hung out in Central Park
    - Shopped

I can't think of anything else off the top of my head....

  • I love that your AHR is going to be at Tavern on the Green!  Very Exciting!
  • I personally really want to go up to the top of Statue of Liberty since they opened it up again on July 4. It's the first time since 9/11. Dunno if you're interested in that tho...but I'm excited about it =) Esp since it'll only be open for another 2 years before they close it down again to do upgrades on it.

  • Oooooh....I didn't even know that the Statue of Liberty was open!  I didn't really have any interest in that, but now maybe I do.

I do want to eat at Katz's...."When Harry Met Sally" is my favorite movie of all time!

  • Here are the things that I remember the last time I went there:

    (1) Top of the Roc (viewing of city on top of Rockefeller--was beautiful! And the lines aren't even as long as Empire)

    (2) Rowing through Central Park (we watched a scene from Ugly Betty get filmed w/Lindsey Lohan--although, I don't really care much for her!!)

    (3) SATC tour

    (4) Watched Broadway--In the Heights--one of my favs!! Its really one that the man can enjoy too and not think its too feminine?

    (5) Ventured through Little Italy

    (6) SHOPPING!! On Fifth Avenue. Hehe =D

  • Ooh!  I second the Brooklyn Bridge and SoHo (especially Little Italy)!
  • Have you been up to Top of the Rock?  It's at Rockefeller.  I think the views from there are better than the Empire State Building.

If the weather is nice, you should just take a walk around Central Park.  DH and I did that for the first time a couple of weekends ago.  It was awesome.  So nice inside the park.  Did you know there's a small castle in the park?

Since the Statue of Liberty is opened up again, you should try going up :)

Get your fill on NYC pizza.

I also love eating street food.. especially gyros.. yum

Try to go to the Shake Shack... their burgers and shakes are pretty good.  However, there is usually a line.  We waited for 45 min when we went... don't think it's worth that long of a wait but it was definitely good.  If the wait is not long, definitely try it.

For shows, I think sometimes there are last minute tickets at the ticket booth near times square and they sell those for cheaper.  Maybe you can try for those once you get there :)

Have fun!!  Tavern on the Green is gorgeous!
