Anyone have experience with SLR Hosp?

I am trying to get opinions from anyone who has delivered in the past at St Lukes Roosevelt Hospital.

I was originally looking for a doctor who is affiliated with Methodist Hosp. in Brooklyn - but a doctor close to my job came highly recomended and she delivers at SLR.

By the way - I am switching doctors so late becuase I had to change insurance carriers.

TIA!

Re: Anyone have experience with SLR Hosp?

  • I delivered there July 2008.  I was planning on the birthing center there, but it was full when I went into labor, so ended up on L&D.  I'd be happy to answer any questions and give you a detailed report, but would rather not post it on the message board as it isn't all positive.  Send me a PM if you'd like more info.

I think much of it depends on your OB.

  • I visited a friend who delivered there recently.  I don't know much about her actual labor, but the shared PP rooms are tiny and her roommate was in the bathroom (the nurse left the door open) when I walked in to visit.  I was sort of horrified at the lack of privacy.  Also she told me that the nurses there really push formula and aren't super supportive of breast feeding, so to be aware of that ahead of time would be helpful.
  • I delivered there in 2002. It was an ok experience. The nurses were quick to push formula, although I was dead set on breast feeding.  Midwives delivered me, and basically kept the nurses in their place. And, I may be a little off, but I would swear the attitude changed once I had my son.  Prior to having him, they were kind and cordial. As soon as he was born, they treated me like I was the stupidest thing ever.  One even threatened to tell the dr, she didn't think dh or I was ready to take our son home.  And she came to this conclusion as my husband and I changed his diaper.  Needless to say, we haven't broken our son yet.
  • I delivered there & probably will again the next time because I love my OB & that's the only hospital that she goes through, however...  What tova said was pretty much true for us too, although we were lucky enough to end up in a recovery room on the same floor as the birthing center.  That was great b/c we got more personal attention, but my roommate was AWFUL.  We have decided that it will be worth the $750/night to get the private room next time.  I also had difficulty w/BFing & found the staff less than helpful.  Next time I'll know exactly what I need to do though & I won't be afraid to be forceful with my wishes.

    GL!
