Mommies: Doula vs. Midwife
Hi ladies..
I know if i want a midwife I need to decided NOW; but what does a midwife have to offer?
I have a basic understanding of what a doula does; but what is different?
Does anyone have sites they can recommend that may help me to decide which is better for me?
What did you choose to use or no use and why?
Re: Mommies: Doula vs. Midwife
Danielle basically covered it all, but the basic difference is that a doula is a birthing coach and doesn't deliver your baby. The midwife will deliver your baby. The midwife replaces the OB.
You can have a doula regardless of if you go with a midwife or an OB.
The decision you actually have to make right now is which one of those you want. A doula is someone separate you'll hire independently and you can do it at any point in your pregnancy. The midwife/OB is your primary caregiver so you'll want to make that call soon - mostly because midwives tend to book up super quick!
I decided to go with a midwife because I liked what I heard about the care, plus I didn't really have a relationship with a family doctor, and I didn't know any OB's in my area, so regadless of what I was doing it was going to be all new!
Good luck making the choice!
I would recommend going with the midwife - that way you have a spot with them, if you end up not liking it, I am pretty sure you can just go back to your family doctor and then on to an OB around week 22-24 (that's when my family doc said she'd stop seeing me). I don't think you'd find a spot with a midwife if you decide you want to go that route when you are further along. But that's just my guess...
Ditto, what PP said. The choice is between OB and mid-wife and a doula is your advocate/birthing coach no matter who you choose to be your primary caregiver for the pregnancy.
We had a doula (see my post from a few days ago) and an OB. I had to go with an OB because I was high risk. I LOVED my OB, but probably would have gone with a mid-wife if I was not high risk.
