purchasing furniture online

one of our first post-wedding purchases is going to be a wine cabinet and a corner cabinet, both for the dining room. we decided against a hutch or china cabinet, and thought these two pieces were more practical for us.

the problem is, we're not really finding these pieces in any furniture stores or department stores.

we found a wine cabinet we really like online at bed bath and beyond. the reviews are good except many people say its difficult to assemble. aside from this, i'm having some qualms about purchasing such large pieces of furniture online sight unseen.

have any of you purchased furniture like this online from bb&b, target, or kohls? i'm concerned if pieces come broken or the difficulty in returning if its not what we thought.

Re: purchasing furniture online

  • We haven't bought furniture from them, but other things we've bought and had to return (including a comforter that got a hole in it the first time we washed it) BB&B has been more than happy to take back and either issue a refund (although sometimes they will only do store credit) or replace the item.  I don't know if this helps, but thought I'd share...

  • If it were a chair or couch or bed, I wouldn't do it--those things I want to try before I get. But given that BB&B has such a great return policy, if shipping weren't too expensive I'd order it. If shipping is really expensive, though, and I weren't sure I liked it, I'd try to find something in person, even if it meant driving further to look.

  • Ditto pp...if the return shipping is high I might not to risk it.  You probably already looked there but did you check Crate & Barrel and Overstock.com?  C&B has some nice wine cabinets and buffets and although it's not super close there is the store at KOP to see stuff in person.

Although you read the online reviews, you might want to also post a link to the pieces on the D&R board and ask if any of the ladies on there have them and what their opinion is, especially if someone has had the piece for a while so you can judge longevity of the product.

  • I haven't ordered any furniture online because I really like to see it before I buy it. But I did want to suggest to look into the site-to-store shipping some companies offer. I've noticed that if you have them send it to your local store instead of your house the shipping is way cheaper, which would be really good for furniture.
