I do understand that this is a scary, dangerous virus - however, I am very sick of hearing about it.
I am a lawyer for a government and I swear every 3rd email I have gotten in the past week has been something about Swine Flu (some legal questions, and some people just abusing the company wide address book) and then my assistant is totally going overboard on the paranoia. She keeps printing out stuff about viruses living on cash, made scary signs for the bathrooms, is pestering HR about starting a 1-800 number (I guess to report cases and/or notify employees should we decide to shut down or something?!), etc etc.
ARGH, is this normal? Are people at your work/school/town acting like this?
Re: ugh. swine flu (vent)
In our office there are signs in the bathroom, kitchen about washing hands to prevent getting/spreading the swine flu virus. We have also gotten email announcements about it and our office services department distributed Purell to each and every employee in the firm. Maybe it's overkill but it doesn't bother me. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
I guess I should have clarified - we got those from the health department here at the government I work for and I don't mind those at all (wash hands, everyone should pick up a (free) hand sanitizer for their office, please hang these signs in the bathrooms, don't come to work if you are sick, etc).
The other emails are just from random employees and the sign my assistant made up has her own commentary that is really overboard. And she said she thinks all our businesses should think about not accepting cash (atm/credit only) after printing out an article about viruses on money.
Ex: of recent email - I was just at the casino eating lunch, I saw an elderly person with a face mask, I think she must have swine flu, why hasn't the building been shut down yet?
Our business involves very large numbers of people coming to our very large gathering space.
We are getting TONS of inquiries about whether it is "safe" to visit our facility given the OMG SWINE FLU PANDEMIC. Um...just as safe as it is going anywhere else where there are, like, people...?
So, yes. It's driving me crazy too. And no disrespect to anyone affected by it, but it's a FLU people -- you get sick, then you get better. People who have died from Swine Flu are the same populations who are at risk to die from any other flu -- young people, elderly, and folks with weakened immune systems.
BUT OMG SWINE FLU PANDEMIC!!!
Just a thought but could your assistant have OCD?
LOL! Now that's paranoia! lol.
pugrolls - maybe people are just crazy in the PNW?
I am not insensitive to those that have been affected, and my business does have a little bit of everything (health clinic, daycare, elder services, jail, entertainement, etc) so I totally understand the need for the SANE warnings and precautions that have taken place, IMO it's stuff that should be done every year/all the time but everyone else is just taking it to some crazy town level and it's distracting me from my real work, hahaha.
Lisa - hmmm. I don't think so. This is the first time I have witnessed her being proactive and zealous about anything. so....
lol @ your assistant's email!
i'm a little tired of hearing about it too. don't like 30-40k people die of the regular flu every year? i think the hoopla was how it mutated or something like that. i took an infectious disease class a long time ago, makes me never want to go to a hospital...lol. i'm super conscious of people washing their hands and covering their mouths...my super scientific results are pretty scary..a lot fo people don't do either

maui--maybe you should start blogging about her antics...haha
i feel like the hoopla has died down a lot around me. when it first broke, we got some emails about the mexico office being closed, please cancel all travel there, if you were there recently, please stay home, etc. but that's about it.
there was an outbreak at pax over labor day weekend (big video game convention, 75k attendees, 100 cases of H1N1, including one of my friends), and i work with a ton of engineers who fit the typical nerdy video-game type - but even so, there hasn't been much talk about it. only, "did you hear [about pax]?"
here's the wired article on pax and H1Nerd1 <giggle>
re my friend who got it at pax, his pg wife got the vaccine, but he was left to just deal. it's not. that. big. a. deal. so yeah, i can totally see why you're annoyed!
I've only noticed the hoopla in the media, I just kind of ignore it because the media always blows everything out of proportion.
I work in a hospital so I'm hyper aware of sick people - it seems to me like NO ONE covers their mouths when they cough. I gave some woman a massive stink eye in the gift shop this morning after she coughed all over ALL of the chocolate bar rack. I really wanted a scor bar, but her phlegm and spittle turned me off.
I'm mostly interested in information regarding the vaccine and pregnancy.
