I read your post to my DH about not cloth diapering. He about screamed when he said WHY NOT!! I thought I would pass on some insight to you as a mommy that's cloth diapering one little one. Currently Bella weighs 9lbs and is still in her infant prefolds. We bought 2 dozen and we go through those in about 2 days. It's about 1/2 load of laundry. You could TOTALLY diaper twins in cloth and you'd be thrilled to know my DH agrees (he loves it). If you diapered 2 with prefolds you'd could do a load a day and have a full load. I hate that I only have 1/2 load but I didn't want to go more than 2 days between washings. DH said "why would'nt they, it'd save them a TON of money". He's right! We spent about $60 on 2 dozen prefolds, 3 covers and 2 snappies. We've been diapering for 7 1/2 weeks with thoose so far. We used "normal" dipes when she was too tiny for the prefolds but we spent $50 in a week!! INSANE!! I thought I'd share my thoughts and my DH's too. At first he wasn't on board with cloth and now he likes it as much as I do.
Anyhow, if you are interested in it, let me know and I can pass on more info to you. Just wanted to help you save some $$ if I could!
Re: **The twins mommy Lisa**
butting in - I thought the SAME thing, but didn't want to pipe up earlier b/c I have yet to have a baby, and knew you were still in the oh my goodness/shock phase.
But, I have seen a few twin mommies on the Eco Friendly family board that cloth diaper (I think one even just does it part time - weekends only?) or were checking in with the EFF board for advice on cloth in order to save money.
Yeah, daycares here won't do cloth either. Luckily, we only need parttime daycare...10 hours (2x week) while J is in class.
That said, now that there's two, I wonder if you'veconsidered looking into a care giver/nanny that can come to your home each day (not live-in). Might be the same price or as affordable and two in a day care facility. Just a thought. Then all you'd need to do is get them to commit to CDing as well. As the others posted, at the end of the day, it's INCREDIBLY cheaper! You could factor in sposies x 2 for fulltime daycare vs. CDs x2 with in-home care...may be about the same cost or maybe less to bring someone into your home. Good luck! I am soon you'll figure it all out!

Cloth are nice because the entire diaper (at least for me since I'm using prefolds) goes in the washer. My friend used gdiapers and said it was nasty having to dig out that insert. It's better for the environment but sounds completely disgusting to me
Just my opinion of course. We're both loving cloth diapering and we haven't spent much money at all, so far it's saved us a TON! Bella is going to my SIL for daycare (she runs one out of her home) and she said she'll do the cloth if I teach her. It works out for us. You could tell the day care that they throw the entire dirty diaper into the wash bag and they wouldn't have to mess with it. I had a friend do that and the day care (who originally refused) said they'd do it!
Either way, if you guys want any of my insight (which is only 7 1/2 weeks worth) let me know!
As far as the argument for the environment goes, I'm yet to do a lot of research but I'm not so sure there's a huge difference between disposables and cloth diapers.
In so far as, in Australia, we're on tight water restrictions (our national water levels are reallllly low) and look to be stuck with this for a while to come. Cloth diapers require water and detergent to clean (along with softeners, if you use them etc).
Btw re. fabric softeners...using white vinegar is a more economical, environmentally friendly, chemical-free alternative. It does the job just as well as fabric softeners.
However, I do agree that, in the long run, cloth diapers work out to be a lot cheaper. Especially if you use them for multiple children. I find myself wishing that I had found good cloth diapers before Maya was born so that I could reuse them for this next baby (and maybe the next, if we have a third). I spend about $15 per week on diapers for Maya now (the number of diaper changes per day has decreased a little since she's older). A rough estimate of what I've spent so far works out to be around $2,300 for the first 2 years of her life! Double that for two of em!
So, in comparison, cloth really does seem a LOT better! Yes, it's a pain in the butt to have EXTRA laundry on top of the other household chores that become a struggle to get done once a baby is born...but I think I'd still go with them if I could go back and choose again.
I did actually check this yesterday - we must be sharing a brain! There aren't many nannies available where I live (small place and all), and the ones that are here are WAY out of my price range - even with two kids in the most expensive daycare in town, a nanny would cost more than double per week! I was shocked - I didn't realize they were so $$$ here!
