Carpet install quote - Is this normal?

We had a company take measurements and we picked out a relatively inexpensive carpet.  We want to install it on 14 stairs and a 15x3 hallway.

$1010

I have never had new carpet installed anywhere so I didn't know what to expect.  My husband and I were floored.  We thought that seemed outrageous for that space.  Are we mistaken? Is this reasonable?

Re: Carpet install quote - Is this normal?

  • That seems high to me.  We had 3 bedrooms carpeted with decent carpet for under $700 installed.  Granted, I haggled on the price because I was paying cash and wanted it installed in 2 days so I did get a good deal.  That was through Buddy's on Mosteller Rd.

Maybe it's the stairs that are more expensive because they're more difficult to do?

  • Holy crap, that sounds like a lot to me.  We carpeted our whole upstairs (3 bedrooms, loft, hallway, and steps) this summer and while we did pay more than that, what you're being quoted sounds outrageous to me.  Yikes.

  • Stairs are more expensive and they'll charge if they have to go around banisters in the hall, but that sounds super high unless you picked a very high end carpet.  Did they break it down with details like a per step charge?  If you think you want to use this company I'd tell them that the quote sounds very high and ask them to explain the charge in depth.  Or get another quote and ask them to match the new quote.

ETA-saw that it was an inexpensive carpet.  Hmm, I'd keep looking.

I do agree, the steps definitely add to the cost.  When we got ours, the quote did include a breakdown of the charges.  In our case, the pad we got DEFINITELY increased the cost, as well as the stairs.

  • Okay. Whew. I feel validated.  I'm not cheap but their price really shocked me.  I was prepared for it to be on the high side because of the stairs.  I know that ratchets the price up but still...

They did not give us a detailed quote but that's a great idea.  I think I will have Chris ask.  What's really odd is that it is Chris' friend's father-in-law's company.  If that's the "friend rate" I can't imagine the normal rate.  Yikes!

Thanks ladies. All good feedback (as usual).

  • Oh yeah that is high!   We got 700 plus sq ft carpet, pad and install and paid just a couple hundred more.   Matt did not charge us any additional for the steps!   If you don't need padding up will save a lot more.  Let me know what Matt says!
