Air duct cleaning?

This board seems to have a home improvement theme right now!  Has anyone ever had someone come in and clean their air ducts?  I've heard that it's not necessary for most people but our house is over 100 years old and we get lots of nasty junk the paddle fan blades and even sometimes on the walls.  I think it's dust but it's so much it looks like dryer lint, blech!  Anyway, just looking for others' experiences!

Re: Air duct cleaning?

  • I was just looking in to having this done at our house too... I can't wait to see what everyone says. Our house was built in the 50's and before my MIL bought it the furnace literally blew up and there was black stuff EVERYWHERE, she bought it and rehabbed the house but I don't know that this was ever done and I would just like to know that I am breathing clean air! It's relatively inexpensive too from what I can find.

  • I found an article from the EPA. I'm going to read it over and get some ideas.  I trust them more than the people selling the service!

  • I had never heard of it before this board, but I am seriously thinking about it. Our house was built in the 1880s and I feel like it is crazy dusty. I had to have a talk to H about changing the air filters once which makes me think he was not doing a very good job before I moved in. This might be a good option for a deep cleaning. Plus our air returns are in the floor. I think they get crap in them
  • Cincygirl-our house is also 1880ish and our registers & returns are also on the floor.  That plus two hairy dogs equals a bunch of dust!  I try to change the filters once a month but they're so nasty they almost need changing every two months.  Well, I should say that I try to get DH to change the filters-I hate going into our cellar!

I feel you! We have a cat and there is just dust everywhere. H thought I was crazy when I mentioned something to him the other day about it. Then I played on his allergies and I think I might have him convinced.

  • Hey!

I think there is a post about this on the last page of the board (like page 8 maybe).  The company's that were rec'd were Trinity & Rupert.  Hope that helps!  We are definitely getting this done at our house...

  • We had this done in our new (to us) house by Environmental Doctors, who are based out of somewhere just south of Dayton, I think.  I was very happy with their work and overall professionalism.  Our house's previous owners were chain-smokers and had a cat, and when they took off the registers, there was a nasty pile of dirt and linty-looking stuff back there.  Gross.  They actually had to shop vac the ducts before they could use their HEPA filter vacuum because they were worried the dirt would clog it up.  But now, honestly, you can't smell the smoke in our house since the cleaning (which is good since I have allergies.)  And I feel like I'm dusting less.
