Need advice

So my company is doing some more lay-offs. The trouble is that I am not eligible for EI as I just got off maternity leave a month ago and will not have enough hours for another 4 or 5 months. So do I tell my boss I'm pregnant (I'm only 5 weeks) - with the hope that the company will take that into consideration (coupled with the fact I can't collect EI) or do I wait? What's your advice?

Re: Need advice

  • This may sound harsh but I don't think it's the responsibility of your employer to give 2 hoots that you are pregant and can't qualify for EI. I would be peeeeeved if a co-worker did that and felt like they were somehow more valuable or should be "spared" b/c they chose to have a child. Yep, just my 2 cents.

  • Eek, that's very stressful!

Personally, I wouldn't tell them. If anything, I would think it would make you more expendable if they know you're leaving in a few months, anyway.

I think a lot depends on your relationship with your boss; you know your company best. Do you think that they would take pity on your situation, or are they more cutthroat and will send you packing?

  • I don't think I would tell them - I think it would put your boss in a very awkward position.  I'm sorry - this really sucks!  I hope you aren't one of the ones that gets laid off.
  • Don't say anything. ?You don't have any control over wether or not you make the list... and having to find your replacement in a few months may make you that much closer to the cut. ?Keep quiet until things are more stable.
