Ontario fertility clinics - what do I need to know?
We met with our family Dr. today and she wants us to chose a clinic to be referred to. ?We got a couple pamphlets, and I have to let them know who we want to work with. ?I was surprised that she was ready to refer us right away, but I guess this is good.
We are leaning towards the one at London Health Sciences, but have not decided 100%. ? (Is there anything in KW area?)
How much is covered by OHIP?
What sorts of things will we need to pay for?
Is there a better place for me to ask these questions? ?(Another board?)
Thank you!

Re: Ontario fertility clinics - what do I need to know?
The appointments are covered, along with diagnostic procedures and tests as well as monitoring bloodwork and ultrasounds. Meds are not covered. With IUI, I think the procedure itself is covered but you have to pay for the sperm washing ? at my clinic in Toronto it was $400 for a single IUI and $600 for back-to-back IUIs.
After testing, most patients will start off with a Clomid cycle. That's pretty cheap. The lowest dosage of Clomid cost me something like $30. If you need a trigger shot (hCG), that'll be approx. another $100.
You can ask general questions on Trouble TTC ? a great board. There are a few Canadian ladies there, but some of us here have some experience that might help you as well, so ask away. Feel free to PM me if you have any more specific questions.
I go to One Fertility in Burlington, and I know that the clinic has loads of patients from at least the Cambridge area. Is that too far for you?
I really really like it there. The nurses and doctors are all really, really nice.
Like Jenn said, testing is all covered under OHIP, including bloodwork and ultrasounds. Meds are not covered, and you need to pay for them at the clinic. They have their own pharmacy there.
At One Fertility, which is a brand new clinic, (experienced doctors, but a brand new facility), charges $350 for an IUI, and $600 for back-to-back IUI's. They also charge approx. $5000 for IVF, but that doesn't include the meds.
Feel free to ask me anything about this clinic if you like.
Hey lady. PPs summed it up fairly well. As for drugs, there is another option. I know some clinics mark them up. You can check out Glen Shields pharmacy. They have an online price list and are very competitive.
Also, if you have extended benefits, check out the booklet. Unless it specifically exludes fertility drugs, chances are, you're covered. Mine didn't exclude, and when I called to confirm, I got the run around. I had my HR rep look into and found out I was 100% covered.
Also, drugs like metformin and femara aren't considered fertility drugs, so even if your plan exludes, these will likely be covered.
As for chosing a clinic, it's tough in Canada, because there isn't a national reporting requirement, so it's hard to base your decision off of stats. Referrals are a good start and make sure you're comfortable with your doctors.
In terms of the process, you'll likely do a ton of blood work (both you and D), answer a ton of questions. You'll both have extensive ultrasounds, you'll likely do a glucose blood test and he'll need to give a semen sample. You'll also likely start with a test where they put dye into your tubes to see if they're open. After they have all the results (usually about a month) you'll get a diagnosis and a plan.
Good luck and you know where to find me if you have any questions!
Is One Fertility the new clinic that opened when they closed the McMaster Fertility clinic in Hamilton? That's where I had my fertility workup / IUI done. My Dr. was Fagigh, but I don't know if she went there too. Does that name sound familiar at all? We are starting to think about #2 and I might need some help again.
?
That is the new clinic you are talking about... I read that today on several sites. ?I don't think the website for the clinic is finished yet... no Dr.'s were listed.?
?
Thanks for all the info ladies! ?I have managed to find some good information of a couple of the clinic's websites. ?(SOFT in London for example has really detailed PDFs about so many IF related topics!) ?We are considering London Health Sciences at UWO, and both One Fertility and New Life in Burlington.
We are also considering other options... we'll see what pans out in the coming weeks/months.
?
Our benefits were "reduced" as a cost saving measure last year... fertility drugs/treatments are out. ??
?I am sort of confused about everything still. ?(It's a lot of information to digest), but like I said in my PP, the SOFT clinic in London had an incredible website, and it's helped me understand a lot more about what processes are done when. ? (Most books/sites I've been reading assumed the reader knew what each was for).
The website still isn't set-up completely, but the facility is brand new and shiney! It's great, I highly recommend it there, and I managed to get in pretty quickly, like, within 3 weeks of them getting the referral. My Gyn sent off a referral to One Fertility and to a clinic in Oakville, and the one in Oakville called me in August to book an appt for October. My Gyn sent out the referral in April!!!
I'm not sure what you're fertility issues are, but clomid and femara are about $50 for 50mg, which is usually the starting dose per cycle. If you need injectiables for IUI, I will be using Puregon, which is $300.
Good luck no matter where you go! I wish you the best of luck!
