vacation: wwyd?

So DH and I are discussing going on vacation at the end of October to celebrate our first anniversary.  My job is really unstable right now and I am honestly concerned that the company is folding per my previous post.  I would certainly like a vacation and as always would prefer to not spend the money.  It doesn't work that way though.  We figure we can vacation for under 3 grand which is fine if I have a job this year but for the next year  but not so cool if I don't. What would you do?

Re: vacation: wwyd?

  • How about a long weekend away somewhere close? You could go to a bed and breakfast in Cape May or down to Florida if you want a beach. You could probably go somewhere stateside for a grand.
  • We did look stateside initially and had planned a trip to Boston.  We determined pretty quickly that the cost of driving or flying somewhere for a long weekend in the states was going to cost us around 2 grand anyway.  4 days in Boston for 2 grand made my head spin...naturally the shore would be under a grand but that's about it....
  • If you want to go some place tropical..my DH and I booked a trip to Dreams Cancun for around $1400 for Oct., and that included air fare.  We did it through Applevacations.com-they have some awesome deals right now!
Pregnant with twins! :-) BabyFruit Ticker Follow Me on Pinterest my read shelf:
Meghan's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • We had a similar situation 4 our anniv. We went to Annapolis. I got a 4star hotel (Loews) on Hotwire for around $100/night. Then I think we probably spent about $300 the 2 days we were there. You could also do DC or maybe a bed and breakfast in MD or VA. There are some great wineries in VA.
  • What abou Myrtle Beach, SC?  You can drive there in about nine hours and and you can rent a beach front condo for about $700.00 for a week.

You could also look into Newport, RI, The poconos, Baltimore, Williamsburg VA., Conn., etc..

My sister use to live in Boston and it is an EXTREMELY expensive city.  There are better and cheaper options available.

  • i would postpone.  my husband and i tend to expect the worst, and you can always do your anniversary trip late.   do what makes you feel comfortable!

  • Thanks, great suggestions.  Boston is ridiculous!  We have a wedding in RI in the spring so we hope to head up to Boston after the weddng and waste money that way anyway.  In the meantime, I will check out some of your suggestions ladies. I am totally with you Shari on expecting the worst which is why I posted this in the first place.  Total fence straddler right now....I would hate to postpone indefinitely because of work, would hate to go and lose my job afterwards but would also hate to not go because of a fear of losing my job.

  • Have you checked out cheapcaribbean.com?  They usually have something good on there, if you want to get away somewhere tropical.
  • There is a cruise ship leaving out of Philly in late October.  Have you looked into that.  You wouldn't need airfare.
  • I haven't looked into a cruise yet.  DH only has 4 vacation days left before the new year so that will leave us with a 6 day vacation max-his 4 vacay days and saturday and sunday.  I ruled out Europe and cruising because of the limited vacation time.  I looked stateside ( new england area/ new orleans/ atlanta/florida) and cozumel, cancun, isla mujeres, dominican so far.  Honestly we can totally skip vacation altogether but my sister said not to.  She thinks that the first year of marriage is the most important and we should celebrate by doing something really fun.  My practical side and frivolous side are at war with one another on this.  Part of me also hates to let my job get the best of me and scare me...hahaha!  I have accrued about 2 months of accrued time off I think because I am seldom out sick or on vacation.....

It is important to celebrate a good (sometimes difficult) first year. A vacation might not be required to do this though.

I think the suggestions on where to look / where to go are great. However, DH and I went to Jamaica around the same time that you and your DH went there. When our one year came and went we were content with having just vacationed (so soon after the honeymoon). We're saving cash so that by next summer (two years for us) we'll be able to go on vacation without hesitation or use of credit cards. (Well, as much vacation as you can do with an infant.)

  • What about a long weekend in VT ? October is supposed to be the BEST month up there.....My sister and husband actually went on their HM (They were married in Oct) b/c she did not want to fly and was afraid of A Huricane etc etc....They loved it!  DH family has a condo up there we always go in the winter but we keep meaning to get up in the fall......There are alot of Really Beautiful B & B's up there.  Have fun wherever you go!!
  • I'd split the difference and spend $1500 or less on something closer to home.  That's probably about how much H and I spent when we went to vegas...possibly even less.  Our hotel and flight was $600 total for the both of us.  That would leave $1,100 to spend on food, drinks and gambling.
